Beantown beatdown.

In memoriam of those who were slain.

What can we say about Boston College’s performance against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday? At least they didn’t give up a 100yd receiver right? For just the third time all year BC can make that claim — so at least there’s that? There aren’t many nice things we can say about a vastly over-matched Boston College Eagles squad.

Clark Lea’s defense ended up turning in the performance of the season on Saturday. They held a top 40 Boston College offense to season lows in passing yards per attempt (3.0) and just above a season low in rushing yards (31 more yards than against Clemson). Historically, that is the lowest passing yards per attempt that a Brian Kelly coached team has ever allowed to a non-option team — outside a monsoon (NC State in 2016 averaged 2.9). Barring the 39 yard pass to Kobay White that set up their lone score, Boston College looked like Yamcha out there. They were completely out matched and made to look foolish. You almost felt bad for them.

Almost.

After failing to get in the endzone on their first two drives, Chase Claypool puts the Irish up 13-6 with a sick foot drag move to juke BC corner Brandon Sebastian out of his jockstrap.

Midway through the 3rd quarter the game felt like it was stuck in the mud. The Irish had kicked 4 field goals and only lead 19-7. Sometimes all it takes to blow open a game is a big play. Enter Khalid Kareem, as he tears the ball out of Dennis Grosel’s hands and Drew White jumps jumps on it to set the Irish up in BC territory.

The second Irish touchdown is an easy pitch and catch to Cole Kmet. That touchdown gave Kmet six on the season, which ties him with Ken MacAfee(1977) for the single season record of touchdowns by a Notre Dame tight end.

With the final home game in the books, we now turn our gaze westward for the season finale against Stanford. As far as season/series finale’s go, with the prospect of a perfect season is gone, a Breaking Bad level ending is out of the question. So instead, while the Dexter series finale may have ended in disappointment for fans with the arrival of lumberjack Dexter, I think I speak for all of us, that there would be no disappointment if the Notre Dame season finale ended with the arrival of lumberjack Brian Kelly. Let’s chop wood.

Here are just a few thoughts on a Monday afternoon.

Not a fan of the throwback uniforms

Before we go any further, I want to make it clear that Notre Dame’s uniforms weren’t even in the same universe that the Yankee Pinstripe uniforms will forever rule — they were quite pleasant. Still... I’m not the biggest fan of them for several reasons:

I’m still a bit mad that my Frank Leahy theory wasn’t what actually happened. Again... missed opportunity.

The gold pants were basically the same color as the 2011 uniforms — not 1988.

Just about every bit of it seemed like a lazy effort.

They weren’t bad, but I assume (maybe unreasonably) that these could have been a lot better. The black shoes were dope though.

Flutie Report

I stayed true to my word and watched the game on NBC with Mike Tirico and Doug Flutie and recorded the NBCSN broadcast with Jessica Smetana, Daelin Hayes, Darius Walker, and the radio crew. I have to be brutally honest here... Flutie was fine.

Maybe Flutie adjusted his style (or whatever) due to the whole Fan Feed thing, but it was as normal and flat of a broadcast as I’ve seen during his time with NBC.

The Fan Feed was a success as far as I can tell. NBC has wanted to make Notre Dame football games something more unique for the viewers at home, and failed miseraly with the sky cam. I fully believe that the massive positive feedback (as well as some constructive criticism) will allow NBC to do this more in the future.

So... well played everyone.

Home field things

Maybe the most talked about stat from Saturday’s game was that Notre Dame finished their home schedule by extending its winning streak inside Notre Dame Stadium to 18 games. The Irish have not lost at home since that battle against the Georgia Bulldogs in week two of 2017. Naturally, fans have to wonder how much longer this can last.

Next year, the Irish play this home schedule:

9/12 Arkansas Razorback

9/19 Western Michigan Broncos

10/10 Stanford Cardinal

10/31 Duke Blue Devils

11/7 Clemson Tigers

11/21 Louisville Cardinals

It’s reasonable to think that Notre Dame could be on a 22 game winning streak once Clemson comes to town. It could very well be one of the great college football games of the 2020 season.

Come back Ian

There was a debate during the offseason about if Ian Book returns in 2020 — would it hurt the Irish in the long run because of the consequences that comes with such a decision (namely the possibility of Phil Jurkovec transferring)?

My answer was that I didn’t care about 2021. The best thing possible for 2020 is a Book return. Notre Dame will likely return its entire starting offensive line, all tight ends (even Cole Kmet) , and quite a few weapons at wide receiver. All of Notre Dame’s running backs are eligible to return in 2020, but more importantly — Chris Tyree will be enrolled in school.

So there’s a lot there.

Book gave the “we’ll see” answer after the Boston College Game, but most outlets are sitting around 90% convinced he returns. My thought... yes please.

Ready to kill a tree

One game left and I’m extremely excited that it’s the Stanford Cardinal. I’m ready to end the bullshit that has plagued Notre Dame in Palo Alto in their last 5 trips out there. I’m ready to chop the tree down, cut it up, split it, and set ablaze using a chemical fire.

This game won’t mean much to anyone outside of the Notre Dame bubble, but I guarantee you this means a ton to Brian Kelly, the team, and to most fans that I consider to be a friend.

BURN THE TREES TO THE GROUND.

The Irish don’t see a change in their ranking following the BC win

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish beat the Boston College Eagles handily over the weekend. Unfortunately for them, that did not impress voters in either the AP Top 25 or the USA Today Coaches Poll. The team remains at #15 in both polls heading into week 14. They were in the same spot heading into last week.

Let’s look at both polls at the start of week 14:

The top five remains the same across both polls this week.

Oregon lost to Arizona State over the weekend, sending the Ducks plummeting out of the top ten in the rankings. Utah and Oklahoma remain alive in the playoff hunt as a result.

Penn State’s second loss of the season also moves them out of the top ten.

Navy and USC both rejoined the top 25 in both polls this week following strong wins for both programs.

Almost to the end...

The stakes each week only get higher for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish each week as they try to make a run at <s>the college football playoff</s> a New Years 6 bowl game. Not only do they need to win out, but they will need some help from all over the country. Some of that help can come from the teams on Notre Dame’s schedule. If Notre Dame’s opponents are having a good year, then obviously a win against each opponent helps them in their cause (except for Michigan — because screw those guys).

I’ll be keeping tabs on Notre Dame’s massive needs from other to get a New Years 6 Bowl bid and talk about that later in the week — so don’t you worry about that.

A good way to end the home schedule.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish improved their record to 9-2 on the season with one game left after beating the Boston College Eagles, 40-7 on Senior Day.

The defense was a huge part of why the Irish scored so many points. Notre Dame recorded 9 tackles for loss that included 4 sacks. Adetokunbo Ogundeji tallied 2 of those sacks while Alohi Gilman and Khalid Kareem each got one for themselves. Kareem also got another forced fumble after stripping BC quarterback Dennis Grosel. Drew White fell on that fumble which ultimately led to an Irish touchdown.

Asmar Bilal was good all day and led the team in tackles with 8, and Kyle Hamilton got his 4th interception of the season — another turnover that resulted in an Irish touchdown.

Notre Dame beat Boston College 40-7 despite a slow start.

In the early parts of the game inside Notre Dame Stadium, it certainly didn’t look like the Notre Dame Fighting Irish offense was clicking on all cylinders against the Boston College Eagles. Notre Dame’s first three offensive possession’s resulted in two Jonathan Doerer field goals, and a punt from Jay Bramblett.

Ian Book managed to find Chase Claypool on a short touchdown pass to finish a 75 yard drive late in the second quarter for the first trip into the endzone. Notre Dame would add another field goal with one second left in the first half to make it 16-7 at halftime — but Irish fans were confused, angry, and frustrated.

So, typical day — right?

After what looked like an inefficient first half, Notre Dame more than doubled itself up in the third quarter with a Book touchdown pass to Cole Kmet, Braden Lenzy scorching earth (again) with a 61 yard touchdown run, and Doerer added his fourth field goal of the day. Notre Dame’s last score of the game was another short touchdown pass from Ian Book — this time to Chris Finke.

So what was the fuss?

For the season, the Irish are averaging 36.3 points per game after today’s result. Back in August there was a great debate about if this would be the best scoring offense in Notre Dame history, and if they would be able to average 40+ points per game. From what I remember, it seemed pretty split to me as to both the media’s and fan’s thoughts on the ability of the Irish to do this, so coming up just short or just over wouldn’t have been a shock either way.

Injuries, however, started to take its toll. Cole Kmet and Michael Young went down in fall camp, and Jafar Armstrong got injured early in the first game of the year. Only Kmet has been a major contributor to this team since his return against Georgia. Young left the team, and Jafar hasn’t even been 1/10 of what we expected. Notre Dame also lost its best two offensive linemen during the year in Tommy Kraemer and Robert Hainsey, And yet... Notre Dame is averaging 36.3 points per game.

There’s no way we can say the Irish offense has been great all season long, and 3rd down efficiency is something that has haunted them in 2019, but put that number up against the 2005 team and it’s really close in terms of points. In 2005, the Brady Quinn led offense (with Charlie Weis schematic advantage) averaged 36.7 points per game — and we adored their efforts.

With similar numbers, it feels like Irish fans are ready to revolt each week and take Father Jenkins hostage until Chip Long is fired. These are very basic numbers, but after 11 games, is there really that much of a difference?

A “bad offense” is scoring over 36 points per game and has helped the Irish achieve a 9-2 record with one more regular season game and then the bowl game. Today the offense put up 501 yards of offense (252 run & 249 pass) and 40 points. I’m beginning to think none of us knows what a bad offense is anymore, because we all have highlight syndrome and advanced stats in our face.

This is a good offense if for no other reason than they are averaging more than 35 points per game, and fighting off injuries. Want to see a bad offense? Take a short drive over to Evanston and check out the Northwestern Wildcats. Notre Dame won’t set any NCAA records this season, but they’re close to setting the single season scoring record.

This bad offense.

Eagles have no answer after the second quarter for Irish offense or defense.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish scored 33 unanswered points to turn an early 7-6 Boston College Eagles advantage into a 40-7 laugher Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium.

Ian Book was 26-for-40 for 239 yards and three touchdowns and zero turnovers. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 66 yards.

Cole Kmet, Chris Finke and Chase Claypool each had touchdowns and Braden Lenzy scored on his only touch of the game — a 61-yard end around that put the game out of reach.

The Notre Dame defense managed to stifle AJ Dillon, the Eagles’ outstanding back, limiting him to 56 yards on 14 carries. The Irish also converted both of their turnovers into touchdowns.

Notre Dame improves it record against Boston College to 16-9, winning the last seven in a row. (We include vacated wins here at One Foot Down, because...screw the NCAA.)

The 15th ranked Irish improve to 9-2 on the season, while Boston College falls to 5-6. The 33 point win covers the 20.5 point spread that oddsmakers had set for the game.
