Chase Claypool’s career day torpedo’s Navy.

Avast and shiver me timbers! In what felt like an M. Night Shyamalan twist, the Navy game was the most comfortable victory of the entire season. Notre Dame scored on their first seven drives on Saturday, an unheard of level of dominance in a Notre Dame Fighting Irish / Navy Midshipmen game. Not only is it the only time in series history, that I can find, where the Irish scored on their first seven drives, it’s the only time the Irish scored on seven straight drives at any point against Navy. I can even show my work!

2018- 44-22, Scored on first two drives, punted on third.

This pass to Lawrence Keys is important for a couple of reasons. First off, nice on Keys for staying with the play and making a spectacular sideline catch. Secondly, we saw this situation a lot this year, usually Ian would run out of bounds and take a short loss on the play. It was nice to see him take a risk with the ball. Which goes back to the coaching staffs comments after the Virginia Tech game of Book taking more risks.

X Marks the Spot

Clark Lea has done it, he found the map. He has solved the triple option! In the last two games against Navy, Notre Dame has allowed 3 points combined in the first half's. Notre Dame has forced 6 Navy turnovers in that span, Navy had turned the ball over just 5 times in the five years before that(2013-2017). What he’s done to Navy on third down is also remarkable.

2019- 5/16 31.25% conversion rate

It sure would be nice if Clark Lea stuck around for a bit wouldn’t it? It is really nice to have what was being sold as a really good Navy offense, come into Notre Dame stadium and get absolutely worked over. Not only all that, thanks to Clark Lea’s domination of the triple option, Paul Moala made real the dream of every Irish fan during a Navy game, to snatch the pitch and take it to the mother flippin’ house, it had me out of my seat pumping my fist!

Don’t miss out on ANYTHING!

We are about to begin another football season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and this season has a whopping seven games at home. That’s seven weekends of sightseeing, tailgating, and college football worship that is unlike any other school in the country.

With the storied tradition of Notre Dame Football and a large fanbase, trips to Notre Dame for game day weekends should be some of the most treasured memories of a fan’s life. I often take it for granted that I have attended so many games over the years; I know that many only make it a few times in their lives. If you’re going to go this year, we don’t want you to miss anything.

This is also for any fan of the teams that Notre Dame is playing this year. The University of Notre Dame is a landmark for college football fans, and with each game in South Bend, you will see thousands of people flocking there to witness all that the school has to offer.

Much of this information comes from Notre Dame’s GAME DAY website. I highly encourage you to visit that site as well. This is more of my personal take on the whole experience.

THE BASICS OF BEING THERE

Before we get into all of the other stuff, you need to get there and know what is allowed.

PARKING

First things first, right... you have to find a spot to park. If you have a parking pass for one of the campus lots (Joyce, Stadium, Bookstore, etc.) the pass will have most of the information on the back side.

The two most common parking lots for “off campus” parking are White Field (off Douglas Road) and Burke Golf Course (off Angela Blvd.). White will cost $30 and Burke will cost $40.

Not only is White Field cheaper, it also has a shuttle service to and from campus.

TAILGATING

Although there are various places to park, the university rules for tailgating are the same for all.

NO amplified sound –- speakers that stand alone, are excessively loud or are connected to an amplifier

NO box trucks, motorcycles, or oversized vans

NO charcoal grills

NO deep fryers

NO drones

NO kegs

NO open flames (e.g. fire pits)

NO propane cylinders larger than 20 lbs.

Propane grills are permitted, but gas cylinders must be under 20 lbs.

Tents and canopies are allowed

WHAT TO SEE

This is where things get tricky. Not because it’s hard to find things around campus, but because there is so much to see. It can be a little overwhelming for first-time visitors to see it all and do it all, but if you give yourself enough time, it is possible to see most of what Notre Dame has to offer.

Here is a map of campus with a link to a pdf for closer examination:

TOUCHDOWN JESUS

Please keep in mind that this is also called The Hesburgh Library and The Word of Life mural. Aside from the golden dome atop the Main Building, it’s probably the most iconic landmark on campus, and you’ll surely want a picture of yourself in front of it.

THE BASILICA

Even if you’re not Catholic, and even if you’re not a Christian, you absolutely must see the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It is an absolutely beautiful place, and for first-time visitors, it will honestly take your breath away.

THE GROTTO

Located behind the basilica on the northwest side, people constantly name the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes their favorite place on campus. With all that goes on during game day, there is still a quiet aura that surrounds the place. Just be there for a few minutes and you’ll understand.

The Grotto

THE BOOKSTORE

There is an aura here too, but it’s much more like Wall Street. You simply have to go once, just to witness the incredible chaos that develops here on a game day. There are plenty of other places on campus to buy merchandise, but this one comes with a merit badge for surviving.

JOYCE CENTER

Visit the basketball arena during a football game? YES. The Joyce Center is home to quite a few things, including the Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. The hall is located on the upstairs concourse, and displays all of the trophies and other tokens from all of Notre Dame’s incredible history. Every name of every Monogram winner is engraved in that space.

THE STATUES

While these are spread out around campus, you really need to seek them out by keeping an eye out along your way. “We’re #1” Moses, “Fair Catch” Corby, Moose Krause and the Championship Coaches are among the most popular.

GRACE HALL

The #1 sign that sits atop Grace Hall is lit any time ANY Notre Dame athletic team is ranked No. 1 in the country. Obviously, there is a special place in our hearts for the football program, and when Notre Dame got to No. 1 in 2012, I almost drove up with fellow OFDer Wes Sweigert just to see it lit. (We didn’t, because we were a little too intoxicated to drive).

I, or any number of OFD readers, will be able to give you an honest answer to better help you enjoy your time at Notre Dame.

I should be at all of the Notre Dame football games this fall in the press box. I get bored up there before the game.
Certainly not a tough schedule, but not exactly terrible either.

The stakes each week only get higher for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish each week as they try to make a run at <s>the college football playoff</s> a New Years 6 bowl game. Not only do they need to win out, but they will need some help from all over the country. Some of that help can come from the teams on Notre Dame’s schedule. If Notre Dame’s opponents are having a good year, then obviously a win against each opponent helps them in their cause (except for Michigan — because screw those guys).

I’ll be keeping tabs on Notre Dame’s massive needs from other to get a New Years 6 Bowl bid and talk about that later in the week — so don’t you worry about that.

That was unexpected, but very very excellent

Yeah, that was a really good win on Saturday for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They pretty much dominated in every way. The offense scored TDs on the first 4 possessions, giving Navy no time or opportunity to make a real comeback. The defense set up a couple of those TDs with some forced fumbles. All in all, it was an awesome win despite many people thinking that this would be close, and I was one of those people. Since the game has ended, here are three of my takeaways.

3 Things You All Should Consider After That Game

Any of you that seriously thought Ian Book should have been benched for Phil Jurkovec were just plain wrong

How wrong were you on that? This is what I would tell you now.

Thank you, Jed, my fellow American Studies, Notre Dame graduate. Clearly, Ian Book has shown that he is QB1. Since the 4th quarter game-winning drive vs. Virginia Tech, he has been on an absolute tear. Mind you, I do know that VT, Duke, and the Navy Midshipmen are not really that good in the grand scheme of things, but you can definitely see Book’s confidence back. He is SO much more comfortable in the pocket. He has gotten Chase Claypool and Chris Finke back totally into the mix. Since VT, he has had 9 TD passes. I think he has gotten a bit of his swagger back, and he is showing why he is a leader that his team respects and that you should respect.

This just in: You actually CAN both respect Navy and the series with them while recognizing that the game is tough physically on the players

Firstly, let me echo our Supreme Warlord, Joshua, in something that he said earlier last week:

This definitely showed, as the Irish quickly got ahead of Navy. I was wondering if this would be something we would see from Navy, and it was. We are the only Power 5 team they play this season. So, from a respect standpoint, I do like the series and why we play Navy every year. I also think I can have the opinion that it is tough on the players and that Navy isn’t a Power 5 opponent, but also recognize that I, personally, do like how we play each other every year. I know that doesn’t align with some other thoughts on it, but that is ok. I’m just saying, it seemed from social media that you had to either love or hate the series, and I think it is fine to love and hate it a little bit.

Brian Kelly clinched his seventh eight-plus-win season at Notre Dame after the Irish throttled Navy this past Saturday to extend their home winning streak to 18 games. | Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Brian Kelly is now 8-2 at Notre Dame against Navy during his tenure and 8-2 with this year’s Irish. Up next: the battle for the Ireland Trophy against a perennial thorn in the side of the Irish over the years with their NY6 hopes still alive.

This past Saturday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish had relatively no issues in their 52-20 beatdown of Navy to clinch the seventh eight-win season for Brian Kelly during his tenure with two games still to play this season.

The Irish move from one thorn in their side in recent memory in the Midshipmen to another that’s haunted them throughout the last 30 years.

Notre Dame’s undefeated home slate and their shot at a New Year’s Six bowl this season ride on Saturday afternoon when the Boston College Eagles come to town for the Irish’s “Senior Day” game.

Despite the ghosts of the past still haunting many to the present-day, Notre Dame has won the last six meetings against the Eagles by a combined score of 156-85, including a 49-20 rout back in September 2017 on the road.

To open BC Week for the Irish, head coach (and Boston area native) Brian Kelly held his weekly pre-game press conference with reporters and discussed the Eagles, specifically their star feature back, injury updates, thoughts on “Senior Day”, Ian Book and more on Monday.

To be fair to Kelly, seven straight weeks (!) of a team having a week off before playing the Irish is some insane bad luck on the schedule.

AJ Dillon gets another shot at the Irish

In that 49-20 rout from the Irish against BC two years ago, Eagles running back AJ Dillon was only a freshman by Jon Hilliman and didn’t have a day that he’s become accustomed to having during his (almost) three seasons.

Dillon had 16 carries for just 58 yards in the 29-point loss, but since that defeat, he’s become one of college football’s most consistent players at the running back position.

This season, only Oklahoma State’s Chubba Hubbard (1,726 yards) and Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor (1,463 yards) have more yards on the ground than Dillon’s total of 1,451 on 272 total carries. That’s a 5.3 yard-per-carry clip, which is partly why Kelly recruited Dillon to Notre Dame before he committed to BC.

With 4:45 remaining in the second quarter, Notre Dame kicker Jonathan Doerer drilled a 32-yard field goal to put the Irish up 31-0. The Irish, seven point favorites coming into the game, reached 100 percent win probability after that made field goal.

SUCCESS RATE

Ian Book was 14-of-20 for 284 yards, 5 touchdowns and zero interceptions. His success rate for the game was 65 percent, the sixth best performance of any Irish quarterback in the Brian Kelly era (minimum 10 attempts) and tied for the best effort this year.

What is success rate?

“The goal of success rate is to create an on-base percentage-style efficiency measure,” ESPN’s Bill Connelly wrote last year. “Depending on a given down and distance, each play is deemed successful or non-successful:

First downs: gaining at least 50 percent of necessary yardage (usually 5 yards) is successful.

Second downs: gaining at least 70 percent of necessary yardage is successful.

Third or fourth downs: gaining at least 100 percent of necessary yardage is successful.”

For quarterback performances, Connelly told me to consider only downs where a pass was attempted or a sack was recorded. (He’d also suggest adjusting for opponent, which I haven’t done.)

The Irish ran 53 offensive plays and were successful on 26 of them. Their 49.1 percent success rate as a team was 37th best in the Brian Kelly era and fourth best this year.

BREAKING TACKLES/MISSED TACKLES

I charted Book with one missed tackle caused and Claypool with two missed tackles caused. For the season, Tony Jones Jr. has broken or dodged the most tackles — 24. Claypool is second with 10, and Book is third with nine.

YARDS AFTER CONTACT

As I used to chart games for College Football Film Room, I use their guideline to calculate based on where the ball was when contact was made. It has to be substantial contact, when the runner is either slowed or in danger of being tackled.

YARDS AFTER THE CATCH

BOOK PASSING CHART

TARGET COUNT

Notre Dame quarterbacks are targeting Chase Claypool an average of 8.3 times per game this year. If he continues on that trajectory, the wide receiver from British Columbia will have 100 targets by the end of the regular season.

Miles Boykin had 99 targets during a 13-game season in 2018, excluding plays negated by penalty. The last Notre Dame receiver to be targeted 100 or more times was Will Fuller in 2015. He had exactly 100 targets.

BOOK VERSUS HIS PREDECESSORS

The senior has now taken 1,444 snaps under center for the Irish. Here’s how his statistics match up to five of his predecessors who took that many snaps for Notre Dame. (Carlyle Holiday took 1,443 snaps under center for the Irish from 2001-2004.)

Good vibes after a 52-20 win.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got a much needed blowout victory on Saturday against the Navy Midshipmen. It was the third time this season that Notre Dame gave its home fans a 52 point performance, and it increased the Irish winning streak inside Notre Dame Stadium.

It was a solid performance by the Irish — but particularly from Ian Book, Chase Claypool, Khalid Kareem, and Paul Moala. Those performances helped the Irish get those 52 points with just 24 minutes of possession.

It’s a different team

For the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, nothing is going erase the memory of that terrible loss against the Michigan Wolverines three weeks ago. The team folded and played awful, and looked more like a team that wouldn’t make a bowl instead of the top 10 team that they were at the time. It was telling that the bigger story coming out of Ann Arbor wasn’t “Jim Harbaugh’s big win” but that Notre Dame absolutely failed to show up to play a football game.

For 95% of the next game against the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Irish played tight and more like they were playing to NOT lose instead of for the win. The Irish were 18 point favorites in that game, and it wasn’t until that final drive that Ian Book and his teammates on the offensive side of the ball got loose and turned up their level of play. Book’s passes to Chase Claypool, and then his feet to get yards — and ultimately the game winning touchdown — made all the difference.

With the “haters silenced” a little bit, the Irish then went down to Tobacco road to take on the Duke Blue Devils and continued that offensive performance hand in hand with a defense that played dominant. It was what was supposed to happen, but not many thought it would actually go down that way. Despite two interceptions from Book, he started throwing more downfield and created more running lanes for himself along the way.

Enter Navy.

As the Midshipmen rattled off win after win with explosive performances over the season, this game became more and more important. Navy was ranked #21 in the AP Poll and #23 by the college football playoff committee — and Irish fans squirmed all week waiting for this game.

As it turned out, Notre Dame is continuing to build on that last minute touchdown against Virginia Tech with this 52-20 win at home today. The Irish held that “scary” Navy offense to 281 yards rushing (well below the Navy average) and 79 yards passing. A lot of those yards came in the late stages of the third quarter and the 4th quarter as Notre Dame turned to its bench. The starting Irish defense only gave up a field goal and recovered 3 fumbles to set the offense up.

While Chase Claypool’s four touchdowns are certainly the biggest stat of the day, it was one throw from Ian Book to Braden Lenzy for a 70 yard touchdown that shows just how far Book and the offense has come. Notre Dame needed to push the ball more down the field through the air, and that play is exactly what has been missing.

There are still plenty of question marks with this team as far as the running game goes, but with both Tommy Kraemer and Robert Hainsey out for the year, it probably will be a little bit of a struggle on the ground. The way they are going out there and attacking the defense, however, makes up for that in a lot of ways.

Even if the Irish win their final two games of the year, they still might not get enough help to launch them into the Cotton Bowl, but they are looking more and more worthy of such a bid — more so than just a few weeks ago.

A corner has been turned, and Brian Kelly talked about the Virginia Tech game being the origin of that shift in his post game presser after Navy. It’s a rallying cry and something they can and will use as motivation to finish the season strong with a 10-2 record and on their way to whatever bowl game they end up playing.
