Don’t miss out on ANYTHING!

We are about to begin another football season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and this season has a whopping seven games at home. That’s seven weekends of sightseeing, tailgating, and college football worship that is unlike any other school in the country.

With the storied tradition of Notre Dame Football and a large fanbase, trips to Notre Dame for game day weekends should be some of the most treasured memories of a fan’s life. I often take it for granted that I have attended so many games over the years; I know that many only make it a few times in their lives. If you’re going to go this year, we don’t want you to miss anything.

This is also for any fan of the teams that Notre Dame is playing this year. The University of Notre Dame is a landmark for college football fans, and with each game in South Bend, you will see thousands of people flocking there to witness all that the school has to offer.

Much of this information comes from Notre Dame’s GAME DAY website. I highly encourage you to visit that site as well. This is more of my personal take on the whole experience.

THE BASICS OF BEING THERE

Before we get into all of the other stuff, you need to get there and know what is allowed.

PARKING

First things first, right... you have to find a spot to park. If you have a parking pass for one of the campus lots (Joyce, Stadium, Bookstore, etc.) the pass will have most of the information on the back side.

The two most common parking lots for “off campus” parking are White Field (off Douglas Road) and Burke Golf Course (off Angela Blvd.). White will cost $30 and Burke will cost $40.

Not only is White Field cheaper, it also has a shuttle service to and from campus.

TAILGATING

Although there are various places to park, the university rules for tailgating are the same for all.

NO amplified sound –- speakers that stand alone, are excessively loud or are connected to an amplifier

NO box trucks, motorcycles, or oversized vans

NO charcoal grills

NO deep fryers

NO drones

NO kegs

NO open flames (e.g. fire pits)

NO propane cylinders larger than 20 lbs.

Propane grills are permitted, but gas cylinders must be under 20 lbs.

Tents and canopies are allowed

WHAT TO SEE

This is where things get tricky. Not because it’s hard to find things around campus, but because there is so much to see. It can be a little overwhelming for first-time visitors to see it all and do it all, but if you give yourself enough time, it is possible to see most of what Notre Dame has to offer.

Here is a map of campus with a link to a pdf for closer examination:

TOUCHDOWN JESUS

Please keep in mind that this is also called The Hesburgh Library and The Word of Life mural. Aside from the golden dome atop the Main Building, it’s probably the most iconic landmark on campus, and you’ll surely want a picture of yourself in front of it.

THE BASILICA

Even if you’re not Catholic, and even if you’re not a Christian, you absolutely must see the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It is an absolutely beautiful place, and for first-time visitors, it will honestly take your breath away.

THE GROTTO

Located behind the basilica on the northwest side, people constantly name the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes their favorite place on campus. With all that goes on during game day, there is still a quiet aura that surrounds the place. Just be there for a few minutes and you’ll understand.

Twitter

The Grotto

THE BOOKSTORE

There is an aura here too, but it’s much more like Wall Street. You simply have to go once, just to witness the incredible chaos that develops here on a game day. There are plenty of other places on campus to buy merchandise, but this one comes with a merit badge for surviving.

JOYCE CENTER

Visit the basketball arena during a football game? YES. The Joyce Center is home to quite a few things, including the Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. The hall is located on the upstairs concourse, and displays all of the trophies and other tokens from all of Notre Dame’s incredible history. Every name of every Monogram winner is engraved in that space.

THE STATUES

While these are spread out around campus, you really need to seek them out by keeping an eye out along your way. “We’re #1” Moses, “Fair Catch” Corby, Moose Krause and the Championship Coaches are among the most popular.

GRACE HALL

The #1 sign that sits atop Grace Hall is lit any time ANY Notre Dame athletic team is ranked No. 1 in the country. Obviously, there is a special place in our hearts for the football program, and when Notre Dame got to No. 1 in 2012, I almost drove up with fellow OFDer Wes Sweigert just to see it lit. (We didn’t, because we were a little too intoxicated to drive).

Besides all of the landmarks on campus, there are tons of other happenings going on around campus leading up to the game. Due to three different kickoff times this year, the times for these events vary. I’ll do you a solid and list them for each kickoff time.

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS

Each experience at Notre Dame is unique, so please ask around if you haven’t been there before. In fact, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask in the comments below. I, or any number of OFD readers, will be able to give you an honest answer to better help you enjoy your time at Notre Dame.

I should be at all of the Notre Dame football games this fall in the press box. I get bored up there before the game. If this little guide helped you in any way, and you want to say hello, give me a shout on Twitter either @onefootdown or @TheSubwayDomer and I’d be happy to shake your hand and share a cold drink (or a warm one in November).

Breaking Down the First Career Touchdown Pass for Phil Jurkovec

Overview

As a former college football player, I am going to try and take a deeper dive from an X’s and O’s perspective on what I deem is the turning point play in Notre Dame Fighting Irish football games this season. I’ll do my best to inform readers as to why certain players reacted certain ways, both on the offensive and defensive sides fo the ball. If you thought the turning point was a different play, feel free to share! Now let’s take it to the play against the Bowling Green Falcons

Setting the Stage

Honestly, there was not much of a “turning point” play in this game. Generally I like to focus on a critical point in the game with a play that changed momentum or ultimately the outcome. Since this game was over very quickly and was never in doubt, I wanted to highlight a play that may seem very simple, but is important for other reasons (development of redshirt freshman Phil Jurkovec). Notre Dame was up 38-0, with PJ leading the way. He had just completed a long pass down the middle of the field to utility man Avery Davis. They hurry down the field and look to get a play in quickly to score from about 8 yards out.

The Play

Notre Dame comes out in 20 personnel (2 backs no tight ends) with Davis and Jahmir Smith lined up next to Jurkovec. This is a unique position grouping since Avery Davis is a running back, but is often treated like a slot receiver. Expect to see two running backs very consistently this weekend with Jafar Armstrong being both in the backfield as well as in the slot. There will be a heavy doses of 22 and 21 personnel this upcoming week, which can create some real nightmare matchups.

Back to the play. Notre Dame spreads the field with 2 WRs to the top of the field, one into the boundary, and backs flanking Jurkovec.

This is is a set where Notre Dame is going to have some type of play action, threat of quarterback run, or a quick route out of the backfield. As you can see, Davis is just SLIGHTLY lined up about a half yard in front of Smith here. As a DB, this makes me think they will be crossing since if they were on the same levels, they may collide as one person naturally has to go first.

The designed play call is going to do just that, with Davis crossing in front of Smith quickly (why he is lined up a half yard up), to allow for a Jurkovec to run play action.

As you can see, Jurkovec has his eyes both on the incoming D end as well as the outside linebacker. There doesn’t appear to be RPO (run pass option) threat since Smith clearly looks like he doesn’t think he is getting the ball. Jurkovec does a good, but not great job of selling the run, which almost causes the play to blow up. If he sells the fake to Smith a little bit more, the DE is much more likely to crash hard, opening up the outside and allowing PJ to get outside of the pocket cleanly.

Fortunately, Smith gets juuuuust enough of the D end before he is in PJ’s face. Also, while all of this is going on, Avery Davis quickly gets one step on the outside linebacker, and more importantly, gets his head turned immediately. If his head is not turned right away, the play is over. He and PJ lock eyes and he begins the separate, but it is by no means a gimmie throw, with any error potentially resulting in a pick 6.

The linebacker is not in great position by any means, as his job is to have contain and be on top of the running back, but he is still in a spot where he could potentially make a play on a poorly thrown pass. With pressure quickly coming, PJ knows he must put this ball low and away, or it will be returned for a pick 6. He is also throwing off of his back foot, so the margin for error is even slimmer.

He puts it exactly where it needs to be, low and away, where only Avery Davis can catch it. This is a great throw, which then allow Davis to walk into the end zone for his second touchdown of the season and the first of Phil Jurkovec’s young career.

Even with no doubt at all, we can take away some things here

All good things.

When the Notre Dame Fighting Irish go into a game and shut the opponent out, score 50+ points, and cover the giant 45.5 point spread, that’s a damn good day for me as a fan. Now, I know that the talent gap between the Irish and the Bowling Green Falcons was astronomical on Saturday afternoon, so people might think that it’s tough to have some true takeaways from the game. I definitely get that mentality, but I think we can find some things going forward as we go toward USC Week.

3 Things One Could Consider

Oh, so THIS is what a tune-up game looks like.

I try to avoid comparing the Irish to the SEC just like a lot of the country does, but it was interesting to feel like an SEC powerhouse school this past weekend. We had a cupcake game right before our big rivalry game. I have to be honest with you, it was nice. I still don’t agree with teams in the SEC getting a chance to play a FCS school in mid-November, as that is lame and will forever be lame. But, this game was well-timed for the Irish. The offense sputtered a bit the prior few games, so it was good to build the confidence of the players especially on offense. I’m SO glad, even with this game, the Irish still have not played a FCS opponent ever. I did see this value, even though the Irish seemed to score at ease with the lack of defensive coverage Bowling Green had.

I’m liking seeing Javon McKinley out there more and more.

Not that I ever disliked him out there, but I feel like he might’ve been forgotten about. He had some nice plays for TDs on Saturday afternoon, especially after what seemed like a busted play where he got open and Ian Book found him. I definitely like that he is in the fray more often than not, now. Boosting his confidence to play can help this season and definitely next season when the wide receivers will be losing Chase Claypool and Chris Finke. I’m a fan of him being out there, and could be a dark horse like a Miles Boykin, as Philip pointed out earlier this season.

I, weirdly, had less animosoity for BVG than I thought I would have.

After Brian Van Gorder left in 2016, the Irish have had 2 (and trending toward 3) great seasons. So, maybe it was time, plus good teams/defenses, plus seeing us rip apart his defense on Saturday that made me less mad at him than I thought. I don’t actually wish ill will on him, as he was just a bad defensive coordinator. I found it more funny that he is still back at his old tricks with another couple of defenses (Louisville and now Bowling Green). Maybe I was saving the animosity for USC this coming week, as we all should look to have. You can’t use your energy on Bowling Green, save it for the true rivalry game this weekend. Go Irish. Beat Trojans.

Louisville is becoming a quality win.

The stakes each week only get higher for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish each week as they try to make a run at the college football playoff. Not only do they need to win out, but they will need help from all over the country. Some of that help can come from the teams on Notre Dame’s schedule. If Notre Dame’s opponents are having a good year, then obviously a win against each opponent helps them in their cause (except for Michigan because screw those guys).

Jafar Armstrong plans to return this week against the Trojans

Brian Kelly met with reporters this afternoon to discuss a variety of topics as the Irish turn their attention toward USC.

Injuries

-Jafar Armstrong has a strong possibility of playing on Saturday. Brian Kelly said that Jafar’s biggest test will be on Tuesday. How he responds to the workload at practice will determine his playing status for USC. Kelly did say that based on what Armstrong did last week in practice, the belief is that he will be available to play.

-Lawrence Keys should return to action this week as well. Keys was able to run at 90% of his body weight on an anti-gravity treadmill today while working with the athletic trainers. He will return to practice at full speed on Tuesday.

-Shaun Crawford will begin conditioning work on Tuesday but is still a few weeks away from playing.

-The Notre Dame Fighting Irish did not sustain any major injuries during yesterday’s contest that will limit anybody in practice this week.

Offense

-Brian Kelly had positive things to say about the offensive line and running backs. He noted that Jarrett Patterson is much more in sync with both Aaron Banks and Tommy Kramer. Kelly believes the blocking of Cole Kmet and Tommy Tremble have really helped to kick start the running attack.

-The plan for Kyren Williams is to redshirt. He has reached his threshold of games that he can play, and the staff would like to preserve his year of eligibility.

-Brian Kelly had an interesting take on the average number of plays the offense has run this year. Currently, the offense is averaging around 63 plays per contest. Kelly does not believe the total number of plays is indicative of the pace the Irish are playing at. He did note that due to the explosiveness of this year’s team the total number of plays per contest will be down. The Irish are currently 10th in the country with a 7.21 yard per play average.

Defense

-Brian Kelly continues to rave about the play of Asmar Bilal. Kelly talked about Bilal’s success this year and attributed it to his dedication to the details of the position in the offseason, as well as continuing to play with confidence. Kelly said the number one thing that continues to appear on film is how disciplined Bilal has been week in and week out.

-Donte Vaughn is heading for a redshirt season. Vaughn has played in 3 games already this season, and the staff wants to be strategic about the 4th game that he will play in. Kelly said, “We won’t play him unless we absolutely need to play him.”

-Sticking with the cornerbacks, Brian Kelly is not concerned about the workload that Troy Pride Jr. and TaRiq Bracy dealt with on Sunday. Bracy moved into the starting lineup this week following Shaun Crawford’s injury. Kelly said that each will get the rest they need during the bye week and be ready for the stretch run.

-Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah will continue to play in the nickel package. Kelly reiterated that Owusu-Koramoah is extremely comfortable in man coverage. The staff wanted him to get some work playing in zone coverage on Saturday but the flow of the game did not allow it. Kelly stated that Owusu-Koramoah will not travel across the field by himself and that in certain situations there will be safety help over the top for him.

USC

-Brian Kelly declared the USC game to be the best of the best when it comes to rivalry games for the Irish. He said it is the one game his players circle each and every year.

-Brian Kelly believes that the Trojan defense is the best he has faced during his tenure at Notre Dame. He also said their offense is a major concern due to the ability to be explosive and push the ball down the field.

-The final question of the day was about Kelly’s recollection of the Notre Dame/USC game growing up in an Irish Catholic household. Kelly said his first memories of the game involved the pageantry of the game on TV and seeing John Robinson and Ara Parseghian on the sidelines.

I truly can not stand anything about USC. If you are truly an Irish fan, you will throw out any cardinal and gold attire you have for this week. I’m not sure there is a more annoying fight song in all of college football than Fight On! Here’s to hoping for another Irish victory this week!

A blowout win against Bowling Green didn’t do much for the Irish’s playoff hopes.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish enjoyed an easy win this week against the Bowling Green Falcons. That wasn’t enough to impress the voters in either national poll.

Here are the AP Poll and Coaches Poll heading into Week 7:

Ohio State’s win over Michigan State let them jump a spot in both polls. The Buckeyes are now in the #3 and #4 spots in the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll respectively. Florida’s big win against Auburn now has them at #7 in both polls. Penn State also joins the top ten this week after a blowout of Purdue.

Michigan’s upset win over Iowa saw them move up to #16 in both polls. USC remain unranked after being idle this week.

Ian Book was 16-for-20 for 261 yards, 5 touchdowns and zero interceptions or fumbles. His success rate was 65 percent, the best of his career.

What is success rate?

“The goal of success rate is to create an on-base percentage-style efficiency measure,” ESPN’s Bill Connelly wrote last year. “Depending on a given down and distance, each play is deemed successful or non-successful:

First downs: gaining at least 50 percent of necessary yardage (usually 5 yards) is successful.

Second downs: gaining at least 70 percent of necessary yardage is successful.

Third or fourth downs: gaining at least 100 percent of necessary yardage is successful.”

For quarterback performances, Connelly told me to consider only downs where a pass was attempted or a sack was recorded. (He’d also suggest adjusting for opponent, which I haven’t done.)

Book’s performance was the sixth best of Brian Kelly’s tenure under this metric. The top five performances are: Malik Zaire versus the 2015 Texas Longhorns (69.6 percent); Tommy Rees versus the 2013 Air Force Falcons (69.6 percent); Everett Golson versus the 2012 Miami-Florida Hurricanes (68.2 percent); Golson versus the 2012 Boston College Eagles (66.7 percent); and DeShone Kizer versus the 2015 Massachusetts Minutemen (65.2 percent).

The Irish ran 61 offensive plays Saturday, with 38 being successful.
The senior has now taken 1,120 snaps under center for the Irish. Here’s how his statistics match up to six of his predecessors who took that many snaps for Notre Dame.

The shutout was nice.

Right before the start of each of Ian Book’s final two series for the game against the Bowling Green Falcons, I kept saying... that’s enough. It felt like there was little point in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior quarterback being out there, and I was looking for a quality number of snaps for Phil Jurkovec. The points and point spread mattered far less to me than building up the depth that we need across the board.

As far as the rest of the team was concerned though, there was a considerable amount of the roster that was used.

The first possession of the game for Notre Dame saw the Irish start slow and punt the ball, but after that, Notre Dame turned up the juice on offense to the tune of 52 points. Book was absolutely on point as he was 16-21 for 261 yards and 5 touchdowns. Brian Kelly said in the post game that they gave Book a chance with one series to tie the 6 touchdown record held by Brady Quinn — but then it was time to move on.

Phil Jurkovec finally threw his first touchdown pass of his young career when he found Avery Davis for 7 yard touchdown pass. Jurkovec ended the game 5-7 for 79 yard and that TD as well as 4 carries for 42 yards. Moving forward, it would be nice to see more from Phil in other opportunities.

For the frontline guys on offense, Chase Claypool had a quick but productive day with 61 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Tony Jones Jr. had another 100 yard game on the ground with 7 carries for 102 yards.

Even with the shutout, it wasn’t a banner day for the Irish defense. Brian Kelly even said as much in post game as there were a lot of coverage breakdowns in the secondary, and some mistakes by the linebackers as well. It’s concerning with the USC Trojans coming to town next week — but that’s next week.

There was a solid rotation on defense throughout the game. Notre Dame has moved Houston Griffith to safety and Cam Hart to cornerback and both saw action today. Bo Bauer, an OFD favorite, saw a good amount of time out at LB and seemed to be in on more plays than his 4 tackles would suggest.

It was a good day.

It wasn’t a great day, and not the 70-0 day I had imagined — but there was more than enough here to be happy with the win. The shutout is important — which makes Julian Okwara’s blocked field goal attempt even more important.

Notre Dame scored a lot of points moving the ball efficiently, but there was a noticeably small number of explosive plays for a 52-0 type of win. The longest pass play was a 40 yard reception from Brock Wright, and the longest rush was Tony Jones’s 36 yard scamper — neither ended in the endzone.

So, yeah, it’s all good here. No one should ever complain about a 52-0 win, but there’s enough “not good” on film to really focus on with a big rivalry game next on the schedule.
