Don’t miss out on ANYTHING!

We are about to begin another football season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and this season has a whopping seven games at home. That’s seven weekends of sightseeing, tailgating, and college football worship that is unlike any other school in the country.

With the storied tradition of Notre Dame Football and a large fanbase, trips to Notre Dame for game day weekends should be some of the most treasured memories of a fan’s life. I often take it for granted that I have attended so many games over the years; I know that many only make it a few times in their lives. If you’re going to go this year, we don’t want you to miss anything.

This is also for any fan of the teams that Notre Dame is playing this year. The University of Notre Dame is a landmark for college football fans, and with each game in South Bend, you will see thousands of people flocking there to witness all that the school has to offer.

Much of this information comes from Notre Dame’s GAME DAY website. I highly encourage you to visit that site as well. This is more of my personal take on the whole experience.

THE BASICS OF BEING THERE

Before we get into all of the other stuff, you need to get there and know what is allowed.

PARKING

First things first, right... you have to find a spot to park. If you have a parking pass for one of the campus lots (Joyce, Stadium, Bookstore, etc.) the pass will have most of the information on the back side.

The two most common parking lots for “off campus” parking are White Field (off Douglas Road) and Burke Golf Course (off Angela Blvd.). White will cost $30 and Burke will cost $40.

Not only is White Field cheaper, it also has a shuttle service to and from campus.

TAILGATING

Although there are various places to park, the university rules for tailgating are the same for all.

NO amplified sound –- speakers that stand alone, are excessively loud or are connected to an amplifier

NO box trucks, motorcycles, or oversized vans

NO charcoal grills

NO deep fryers

NO drones

NO kegs

NO open flames (e.g. fire pits)

NO propane cylinders larger than 20 lbs.

Propane grills are permitted, but gas cylinders must be under 20 lbs.

Tents and canopies are allowed

WHAT TO SEE

This is where things get tricky. Not because it’s hard to find things around campus, but because there is so much to see. It can be a little overwhelming for first-time visitors to see it all and do it all, but if you give yourself enough time, it is possible to see most of what Notre Dame has to offer.

Here is a map of campus with a link to a pdf for closer examination:

TOUCHDOWN JESUS

Please keep in mind that this is also called The Hesburgh Library and The Word of Life mural. Aside from the golden dome atop the Main Building, it’s probably the most iconic landmark on campus, and you’ll surely want a picture of yourself in front of it.

THE BASILICA

Even if you’re not Catholic, and even if you’re not a Christian, you absolutely must see the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It is an absolutely beautiful place, and for first-time visitors, it will honestly take your breath away.

THE GROTTO

Located behind the basilica on the northwest side, people constantly name the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes their favorite place on campus. With all that goes on during game day, there is still a quiet aura that surrounds the place. Just be there for a few minutes and you’ll understand.

Twitter

The Grotto

THE BOOKSTORE

There is an aura here too, but it’s much more like Wall Street. You simply have to go once, just to witness the incredible chaos that develops here on a game day. There are plenty of other places on campus to buy merchandise, but this one comes with a merit badge for surviving.

JOYCE CENTER

Visit the basketball arena during a football game? YES. The Joyce Center is home to quite a few things, including the Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. The hall is located on the upstairs concourse, and displays all of the trophies and other tokens from all of Notre Dame’s incredible history. Every name of every Monogram winner is engraved in that space.

THE STATUES

While these are spread out around campus, you really need to seek them out by keeping an eye out along your way. “We’re #1” Moses, “Fair Catch” Corby, Moose Krause and the Championship Coaches are among the most popular.

GRACE HALL

The #1 sign that sits atop Grace Hall is lit any time ANY Notre Dame athletic team is ranked No. 1 in the country. Obviously, there is a special place in our hearts for the football program, and when Notre Dame got to No. 1 in 2012, I almost drove up with fellow OFDer Wes Sweigert just to see it lit. (We didn’t, because we were a little too intoxicated to drive).

WHAT TO WATCH

Besides all of the landmarks on campus, there are tons of other happenings going on around campus leading up to the game. Due to three different kickoff times this year, the times for these events vary. I’ll do you a solid and list them for each kickoff time.

Get Your Pep Rally On

Things start at the Main Building, with Trumpets Under The Dome at 4:10 PM. Then, the Notre Dame Marching Band begins on the steps of the Main Building at 4:30. The band marches to the pep rally location, and then the rally starts at 6:00.

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS

Each experience at Notre Dame is unique, so please ask around if you haven’t been there before. In fact, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask in the comments below. I, or any number of OFD readers, will be able to give you an honest answer to better help you enjoy your time at Notre Dame.

I should be at all of the Notre Dame football games this fall in the press box. I get bored up there before the game. If this little guide helped you in any way, and you want to say hello, give me a shout on Twitter either @onefootdown or @TheSubwayDomer and I’d be happy to shake your hand and share a cold drink (or a warm one in November).

It’s like someone just kicked me in the groin.

After struggling in different ways in a 35-17 win over the Louisville Cardinals, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got some bad news that will affect a large portion of the season. Jafar Armstrong left the game early on Monday night with an apparent groin injury, and on Wednesday, the extent of that injury became clearer.

Sources tell The Athletic that Notre Dame running back Jafar Armstrong is expected to miss extended time following his groin area injury suffered at Louisville.

It is understood that Armstrong may miss up to two months, with a five-week layoff the optimistic timeline.
— Pete Sampson (@PeteSampson_) September 4, 2019

Take a deep breath.

There is absolutely no spin available that softens this news. For all of those yelling “NEXT MAN UP,” well that’s nice and all but completely off base from the actual situation at hand.

Regardless of depth charts and what have you, Jafar was RB1 and a lot of what Notre Dame wanted to do on offense revolved around Armstrong running the ball, and coming out of the backfield as a receiver. This was clearly evident Monday night as so much of what was worked on in the spring and in fall camp went largely unseen from a schematic standpoint.

What’s important now isn’t what the Notre Dame offense is lacking, but what the other running backs have to offer — because they’re going to need to play.

Tony Jones Jr. had himself a game against Louisville, but I still have my doubts that he can carry the offensive backfield for the next two months. Jahmir Smith showed a lot with his tough runs on Monday, but there is still a real lack of explosion and playmaking ability in the passing game. Kyren Williams seems like a good option, but the last time we saw him he was hearing footsteps on a flare route. C’Bo Flemister is another option, but there is very little to feel confident about with his lack of playing time.

Many thought that Ian Book was going to need to carry this offense on his shoulders if the Irish were going to have a successful year, but a shaky game against Louisville has cast many doubts. As the injury list grows longer at the offensive skill positions, Book’s target list of receivers has grown shorter.

There are no clear answers, and even fuzzy answers need a “remains healthy” tag next to it. In my opinion, Notre Dame is going to have to rely even more on their passing game, and that means a major improvement from Ian Book is needed. There are enough guys there to make it work, but the dynamics involved are now a lot more complicated. Chip Long and Brian Kelly have a lot to figure out here, and I can’t say for certain how that’s going to go.

The 6-foot-4 freshman safety, alongside Alohi Gilman and Jalen Elliott, proved to be worth his preseason hype in the season opener against Louisville.

With 10:17 left before halftime in Notre Dame’s 35-17 victory over the Louisville Cardinals on Labor Day night this past Monday, Irish safety Kyle Hamilton shot from the first-down marker on your television screens up to the line of scrimmage to make a tackle in the A-gap against Cardinals tailback Hassan Hall.

Hall’s quickness jolted him past the 6-foot-4 freshman for a 15-yard gain before Julian Okwara pulled Hall to the ground, giving the underdog Cardinals their sixth run of 10+ yards in the contest already.

As you’ll hear in the quick breakdown from ESPN color commentator Kirk Herbstreit in the clip below, Hamilton was in the right place with the proper timing of his run up to the LOS, but looked like a kid playing in his first college football game.

This is every defender’s dream (or at least one of them). It’s basically the Oklahoma drill now. One on one with a back or receiver and you have to make the tackle.

But, as we saw at full speed during this play, Hamilton is just a shade out of control and plays a little too fast here, giving Hall the opening he needs to use his speed to bolt past the oncoming Hamilton in the gap.

I believe the old expression goes, “Speed kills.” That has two meanings on this play.

It’s just one play, but during this time of the contest, Hamilton and the Irish had no answers for Louisville’s rushing attack. It’s a typical freshman mistake and let’s be fair here, he wasn’t the only one missing tackles on the defensive side of matters on Monday. It’s Week 1 after all.

What helped Hamilton make this play was a few different things here:

It’s a long throw to make across the field from Jawon Pass after rolling out to his right on a “throwback” call.

Like Herbstreit said, he kept his eyes on the ball, while staying in position to help on the deep post mind you, and then trusting his eyes to make a break for the crosser who leaked out back across the field.

Look where he starts his break on this PBU ...

If I gave you three guesses as to who would later break up the pass on 3rd-and-17 to force another Louisville punt, which was followed by a 36-second touchdown drive by the Irish to make it 28-14 in the third quarter off the always-reliable four verticals call, you would know who it was, right?

Alohi Gilman was the best defender on the field for the Irish on Monday night with 10 tackles, 0.5 tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, but Kyle Hamilton showed that he was certainly worth the preseason hype he was receiving after his performances in fall camp and in scrimmages with the two pass breakups and four solo tackles.

It’s rare you see big safeties these days in football and for the Irish to not only have two experienced ones in Gilman and Jalen Elliott, but to have a 6-foot-4 freshman with range, proper instincts and length to frustrate any receiver (and tight end), that gives the Irish a massive boost in the secondary.

The defense, despite the early struggles and much-needed adjustments from Clark Lea, allowed just three points and 195 total offensive yards in the final three quarters after allowing 14 points on 18 plays with 163 total yards for the Cards on their first two drives of the evening.

Those adjustments are easier to assess when you have playmakers on the field like Hamilton.

The fans had first game jitters too

Take my Irish to the 1-0 Road

Ok, so maybe that word association with “Old Town Road” doesn’t necessarily fit, but we’re doing it live!

On Monday night (how about no more Monday night games ever?), the Notre Dame Fighting Irish opened up the season against the Louisville Cardinals on the road. After a somewhat shaky start, the Irish got a bit of their groove back to take actually an overall commanding victory. I have three things from the game for you all here that everyone should keep in mind as we move forward with the season.

3 Things

It’s a bit too easy to get freaked out

What do I mean by this? Well, I fell into this trap as well. A few people (including yours truly), picked the score to be within the point spread. I think I was not alone in predicting not as “commanding” of a win as most people either predicted and/or wanted to happen. I think most of us thought it would have been a bit more lopsided and then Louisville would’ve cut the deficit late. Pretty much the similar final score occurred with a different path to that score. Yes, I saw shades of 2016 Texas in my head throughout the first half, and the team started off relatively slow, but we are conditioned, unfortunately, to plan for the worst. What I did not think of in the moment was how the Irish were just better, and the defense shut down the Cardinals the rest of the game. Overall, there are many things for the team to work on, but you can’t tell me that you wouldn’t be thrilled with an average score differential of 18 points in every game.

This is not the 2018 team

I actually do not mean this as a slight at all. This is something we as fans need to consider going forward. The broadcast team kept beating this dead horse (yes, Chris and Kirk, I DID in fact know that we don’t have Tranquill or Coney anymore), and it is truly something that is so simple that it can get lost in the shuffle. This is a different team from last season. There are new captains, new leaders, and new players filling the positions. There were some mistakes (all of those offsides penalties were by veteran players), and some great plays that were made. However, maybe games will go more like Monday’s game with a back and forth with some teams. It might not be pretty or even close to better than winning in a lopsided manner, but an overall dominance is great to see.

Also great to see were younger players stepping up and helping out the veterans — you need that cohesion on a team like ours. Tommy Tremble stepped up in a big way. Jahmir Smith scored a couple of times when Jafar Armstrong was hurt. Jack Lamb got in there to get a fumble recovery. Drew White at linebacker I think had one of the best individual performances on the team. Kyle Hamilton looks like he is definitely going to be a stud. There are some positives to take away from this new team and new additions to this team.

Ian Book should be just fine

Yes, I know, he did not play all that well on Monday. He had a plethora of mental mistakes. Was I even frustrated with his play at times? Of course I was. But, he still knows how to use his legs and how to be the QB leader. It shouldn’t be questioned whether he has still earned the job, and it is for sure way too early to think that he has regressed as a QB. As of now, I’m not listening to that nonsense. In his on-field, post-game interview, he clearly did not look satisfied or happy with his performance. He did not have a perfect night, but he still led the team to get the job done.

Jafar Armstrong’s MRI looms large today for Irish faithful

Brian Kelly met with reporters today during his weekly teleconference. Although last night’s performance may not have been what fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish expected, Kelly seemed to be pretty upbeat about the things that he saw last night. Brian Kelly touched on injuries, the linebacker rotation, and an assortment of other tidbits with the media.

Injuries

-Jafar Armstrong will be receiving an MRI today on his groin. Kelly noted that Armstrong has a history of a sports hernia in high school and was complaining of pain in his groin/abdominal region last night. A timeline will be known following the results of the scan.

-It appears Chase Claypool avoided a serious injury. Kelly said that Claypool landed on both his shoulders and that the team doctors wanted to do a thorough examination. There was no talk of a concussion, however Kelly did not say that Claypool was 100% either.

-Cole Kmet is scheduled for a CAT scan today. These results will dictate when Kmet can resume full practices. Kelly noted that either way, Kmet is close to a return.

-Michael Young will be receiving an X-ray today or tomorrow on the collarbone. These results will determine when Young can resume running and catching footballs. Brian Kelly stated that Young’s fracture is different than Kmet’s, but both will follow a similar return to play protocol.

Mike Miller/One Foot Down

Linebackers

-Brian Kelly admitted that the picture is still muddied at this position. Traits his is looking for at the Mike position include; being able to be physical within the box, take the physicality to the opposing offensive lineman, and being able to line up the entire defense correctly. He is looking for the Buck position to be able to have the ability to play in space and be able to play man defense against whomever comes out of the backfield on a route.

-Kelly acknowledged that Drew White had an extremely rocky start. However, the biggest takeaways were the great confidence that White displayed throughout the game and the athleticism that he displayed.

-Much to the frustration of Irish fans, this rotation is still unclear. Kelly noted that he wants to continue to take advantage each player’s skill set. He specifically mentioned how Jack Lamb was only used on 3rd downs, whereas Drew White was only on the field for 1st and 2nd downs. Jordan Genmark Heath and Shayne Simon were both lauded for their contributions last night.

Variety Bag

-Kelly stated that the upcoming bye week is not ideal because it does not come at a time where they can get a bunch of guys healthy. However, he is happy to have it this week to avoid having to play a Monday night game followed by an early afternoon game on Saturday.

-Donte Vaughn is still in the picture at cornerback. The goal last night was to get Shaun Crawford reps in the wide-field position. TaRiq Bracy has impressed the coaching staff and appears to be in line for second-team reps behind Crawford. However, Irish fans should plan to see Vaughn in the coming weeks.

-Kelly did not seem happy with the inefficiency on 3rd and short plays. He said the coaching staff will need to review all the plays and determine if they have the right people in the game, if the right plays are being called, and if the Irish are playing to their strengths on 3rd down.

Although the game was closer than expected, let’s all take a moment to be grateful for a win. The Irish have played in plenty of games like this in the past and been unable to right the ship. Brian Kelly continues to demonstrate progress towards becoming one of the nation’s elite teams.

Someone dropped a cheeseburger.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish closed out week one in college football by going on the road and beating the Louisville Cardinals 35-17. It was an 18 point win in a contest that Vegas ended up having around an 18.5 point spread. So... respectable in terms of numbers.

The AP voters decide not to punish Notre Dame for nearly a 20 point win on the road against a Power 5 school — and the Irish ended up ranked #8 in the country. It was the Florida Gators that took the hit for their win over the Miami-Florida Hurricanes (a slightly sloppier affair than ND vs UL).

So, regardless of the frustration you felt on Monday night — the Irish weren’t “dinged” too much for it in a national sense.
