Don’t miss out on ANYTHING!

We are about to begin another football season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and this season has a whopping <s>seven games</s> six games at home. That’s <s>seven weekends</s> six weekends of sightseeing, tailgating, and college football worship that is unlike any other school in the country.

With the storied tradition of Notre Dame Football and a large fanbase, trips to Notre Dame for game day weekends should be some of the most treasured memories of a fan’s life. I often take it for granted that I have attended so many games over the years; I know that many only make it a few times in their lives. If you’re going to go this year, we don’t want you to miss anything.

This is also for any fan of the teams that Notre Dame is playing this year. The University of Notre Dame is a landmark for college football fans, and with each game in South Bend, you will see thousands of people flocking there to witness all that the school has to offer.

Much of this information comes from Notre Dame’s GAME DAY website. I highly encourage you to visit that site as well. This is more of my personal take on the whole experience.

THE BASICS OF BEING THERE

Before we get into all of the other stuff, you need to get there and know what is allowed.

PARKING

First things first, right... you have to find a spot to park. If you have a parking pass for one of the campus lots (Joyce, Stadium, Bookstore, etc.) the pass will have most of the information on the back side.

The two most common parking lots for “off campus” parking are White Field (off Douglas Road) and Burke Golf Course (off Angela Blvd.). White will cost $30 and Burke will cost $40.

Not only is White Field cheaper, it also has a shuttle service to and from campus.

TAILGATING

Although there are various places to park, the university rules for tailgating are the same for all.

NO amplified sound –- speakers that stand alone, are excessively loud or are connected to an amplifier

NO box trucks, motorcycles, or oversized vans

NO charcoal grills

NO deep fryers

NO drones

NO kegs

NO open flames (e.g. fire pits)

NO propane cylinders larger than 20 lbs.

Propane grills are permitted, but gas cylinders must be under 20 lbs.

Tents and canopies are allowed

WHAT TO SEE

This is where things get tricky. Not because it’s hard to find things around campus, but because there is so much to see. It can be a little overwhelming for first-time visitors to see it all and do it all, but if you give yourself enough time, it is possible to see most of what Notre Dame has to offer.

Here is a map of campus with a link to a pdf for closer examination:

TOUCHDOWN JESUS

Please keep in mind that this is also called The Hesburgh Library and The Word of Life mural. Aside from the golden dome atop the Main Building, it’s probably the most iconic landmark on campus, and you’ll surely want a picture of yourself in front of it.

THE BASILICA

Even if you’re not Catholic, and even if you’re not a Christian, you absolutely must see the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It is an absolutely beautiful place, and for first-time visitors, it will honestly take your breath away.

THE GROTTO

Located behind the basilica on the northwest side, people constantly name the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes their favorite place on campus. With all that goes on during game day, there is still a quiet aura that surrounds the place. Just be there for a few minutes and you’ll understand.

Twitter

The Grotto

THE BOOKSTORE

There is an aura here too, but it’s much more like Wall Street. You simply have to go once, just to witness the incredible chaos that develops here on a game day. There are plenty of other places on campus to buy merchandise, but this one comes with a merit badge for surviving.

JOYCE CENTER

Visit the basketball arena during a football game? YES. The Joyce Center is home to quite a few things, including the Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. The hall is located on the upstairs concourse, and displays all of the trophies and other tokens from all of Notre Dame’s incredible history. Every name of every Monogram winner is engraved in that space.

THE STATUES

While these are spread out around campus, you really need to seek them out by keeping an eye out along your way. “We’re #1” Moses, “Fair Catch” Corby, Moose Krause and the Championship Coaches are among the most popular.

GRACE HALL

The #1 sign that sits atop Grace Hall is lit any time ANY Notre Dame athletic team is ranked No. 1 in the country. Obviously, there is a special place in our hearts for the football program, and when Notre Dame got to No. 1 in 2012, I almost drove up with fellow OFDer Wes Sweigert just to see it lit. (We didn’t, because we were a little too intoxicated to drive).

WHAT TO WATCH

Besides all of the landmarks on campus, there are tons of other happenings going on around campus leading up to the game. Due to three different kickoff times this year, the times for these events vary. I’ll do you a solid and list them for each kickoff time.

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS

Each experience at Notre Dame is unique, so please ask around if you haven’t been there before. In fact, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask in the comments below. I, or any number of OFD readers, will be able to give you an honest answer to better help you enjoy your time at Notre Dame.

I should be at all of the Notre Dame football games this fall in the press box. I get bored up there before the game. If this little guide helped you in any way, and you want to say hello, give me a shout on Twitter either @onefootdown or @TheSubwayDomer and I’d be happy to shake your hand and share a cold drink (or a warm one in November).

The game may have been a bit grim, but the day and the photos were brilliant.

One of the exciting things about One Foot Down’s coverage of Notre Dame football this season is the addition of Michael Miller as our official photographer. Michael is a local of the South Bend area and has been heavily involved in taking Notre Dame athletic photos over the years.

He’s also a top-notch photographer for hire, and has an impressive gallery of wedding photos and the like as well. Check him out over at his site: Michael Miller Photography.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish remain undefeated after beating the Pittsburgh Panthers, 19-14. It was a crazy day in college football that day, and the Irish fell on the right side of the win column. You can check out all the images from that day below.

There is no panic button on the desk (again).

Woof.

Only my dry cleaner knows for sure how that game went. Regardless, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came away with a victory on Saturday. The Pittsburgh Panthers gave the Irish their all, but once again the Irish determination and overall talent showed to be the difference in the game. I’m VERY happy to take a 7-0 record into the long-awaited bye week. Now that a bit of the dust has settled, let’s take a dive into my thoughts about the game as we pass into the 48 hours past the game.

3 Things to Takeaway from the ND-Pitt Game

The panic that we have seen in past seasons (particularly last season) is gone.

I’ve seen it all with ND games. Scenarios of wins and losses across the board in how the games are won or lost. No matter what happens, the team this year keeps its composure in ways that I haven’t seen. Sometimes, a team needs to win a 19-14 game against less-than competition. You can call it embracing chaos, throwing in crowd noise and soccer balls, or just plain discipline — whatever you want to call it, the Irish have it. Poise and control of the offense and then the defense pretty much shutting down an average team led the Irish to victory. Sometimes, not to our liking, it takes a full, four quarters to get all of that together. Just win the games in the time allotted. With the way the season is shaping up in regards to other teams in the CFP hunt, I’m good with no self-destruction if it leads to victories once the clocks hit triple zeros.

This season is beginning to feel like the standard.

The Irish are obviously 7-0 going into the bye week. This, to me, is absolutely amazing. I grew up in a time (late 90s through the 2000s) when there was any given day that the Irish could lose to anybody. So this notion of being undefeated through almost two months of play is almost unfathomable. However, I’m very happy to say that I’m not that amazed by it. I now understand what people mean when they talk about this is how it always was with the Irish. Now, I’m happy we keep getting the wins, but I have expected the Irish to win. In the back of mind on Saturday, I still believed the Irish would take the lead to get the job done. I just am less fazed than I used to be. This is a good thing, as the standard has been set and raised significantly. The times have changed, and I’m thrilled not to have to live in fear every single week. Big boy football has finally come back to Notre Dame, and I am ABSOLUTELY here for it. People will say what they will about Brian Kelly and the coaching over the years, but this expecation was not met for a long time. It’s awesome to see.

These guys on the field are young men. They are human. Their own self-worth is overall not based on what they produce for stats or what they provide to get to a certain win-loss record. The game they play begets mistakes and the signs of fatigue because they are young human beings. It is great to see that they have the resilience, but that is why I don’t really fret about the score of the game from Saturday. The media sensationalized it too much, I admit, but you cannot shove to the side the idea about midterms and being ready with no fatigue. It just does not happen. You can’t expect exact perfection every week because it won’t be there, and that is ok. I desparately want to see the Irish win a national championship because of the recognition and history but also because it can show that even through everything tough at a high-level institution (both academically and athletically), they can succeed. But again, these are people, not robots. Sorry to sound preachy, but I wanted to back up Josh’s point. The bye week couldn’t come at a better time, and I’m glad for these college kids, they can rest up in a necessary way to take care of business in the next 5 games.

Whew...let’s just say, I’m glad that one is over.

Too close for comfort, but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish improved to 7-0 with a 19-14 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers. It was not pretty but a win is a win. Almost every team has a game like this, where they play down to the competition and have to win it late. This game was easy for me to pick three players to highlight.

Miles Boykin

I have yet to highlight him this year and that’s on me. Boykin has been so consistent for the Irish that he sometimes gets forgotten about. He was Ian Book’s favorite target on Saturday and made many key catches. Boykin caught a pass to move the chains on 3rd and 5 and then eventually caught the game winning pass to take the lead. Miles Boykin, welcome to the player performances!

Julian Okwara

I was at the game, and it looked like Okwara was moving faster than everyone else on the field. It was amazing to me to see how he always finds himself around the ball making plays. His football instincts must be off the charts. Julian Okwara gets himself into position, and makes athletic plays on the ball. Between Kareem and Okwara, offensive lines must have nightmare about trying to block them.

Khalid Kareem

Game winning sack. That’s about all there is to it. He was an absolute monster rushing the passer. Kareem is also getting to be the guy the Irish turn to when they need something to happen. With a 19-14 lead late in the 4th, Kareem sacked the Pittsburgh quarterback for a 14 yard loss. A truly game changing play by a terrific player.

During a volatile weekend, the Irish did what is most important: win and advance.

Surviving the Weekend

It was far from a pretty day of football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In a 19-14 struggle against the Pittsburgh Panthers, the Irish looked little like the team that manhandled both Stanford and Virginia Tech.

But while they struggled, several other teams did as well: Georgia, Washington, West Virginia, Penn State, and Auburn all dropped their respective contests.

And with that, the Irish survived this upset weekend. It was one of the most important weeks for Notre Dame to stay alive, and they did.

Mike Miller/One Foot Down

It was far from perfect. Pitt stuffed the Irish running game, Ian Book threw two interceptions, and Pitt was allowed to return a kickoff for a touchdown.

But lost amidst a hectic weekend and a near-loss to a lesser team were some positives worth holding onto.

Chase Claypool quietly had a solid outing (5 receptions, 61 yards, ad a touchdown). Fans and coaches alike were waiting to see Claypool make some plays this season, and for the first time this season, he delivered a complete game from top to bottom.

TaRiq Bracy - a true freshman cornerback - also showed out agaisnt Pitt. He came in to replace a struggling Donte Vaughn, and ended as the Irish’s highest graded player on the night according to Pro Football Focus.

Kelly lauded Bracy’s effort in his Sunday Teleconference, “The moment is not too big for him. He’s a level-headed young man... we really like his skill set when the ball is headed downfield.”

There are many more - such as a stout defensive performance, or Ian Book’s completion percentage continuing to be fantastic - but the takeaway from this week is that the Irish kept on winning. In a weekend tabbed by many as being a potential letdown, it was. But if the letdown is still a win, all Notre Dame fans will take that.

The Irish survived; next up: advance.

Other Notes from the Teleconference:

Injury News: Kelly stated that they escaped Pitt without injury, and that they expect already-injured players Troy Pride and Jafar Armstrong to be back with the team soon.

Hitting on the state of the team, Kelly said, “Super excited. 7-0 with a very difficult schedule. Beat three Top 25 teams... We can get better. If you asked me about this preseason, I’d be extremely happy and I am now.”

When asked what was most important for his team this week, Kelly offered, “Probably the mental piece. Physically, we’re in a good place... We also want to start preparing for Navy.”

Kelly touched on the running game struggle against Pitt: “There were a couple of plays we wish we could have blocked up better. All in all, Pitt’s plan was to exert a lot of pressure on the running game and they left themselves vulnerable in the passing game.”

Kelly hit on the lack of holding penalties being called, “Today was a little unusual. We sent in twice as many plays as we normally do.”

Elaborating on the holding penalties and the league’s respons, “It’s been a mixed bag. We get ‘that should have been called’ or ‘it’s a gray area call,’ ...We’ll just keep playing and not complain about it.

Kelly praised Wimbush’s support for Ian Book, “He’s right next to Ian when he comes off the field, talking to him, he’s been outstanding.”

On Donte Vaughn and why he was pulled, “They went after him a little bit, and then we moved Julian Love to the boundary and Tariq Bracy was better to work the field. Donte is much better against the run, which is why we made the change.”

Touching on Navy, Kelly said: “They’ve kind of morphed over the past year in terms of what they are doing, using multiple quarterbacks and going out of the shotgun... We’ll go out tomorrow and the first thing we’ll do is install Navy’s offense... It’s about using this week to get the base looks and keep them up to date with new things.”

On the kickoff struggles: “Placement hasn’t been where it needs to be. We’re kicking it down the middle of the field, we need to be better with lane distribution and tackling.”

On Justin Yoon versus Jonathan Doerer for kickoffs, “Justin was a little overworked and we didn’t want to push him. He’ll get some rest and we can then evaluated if giving him both duties is in our best interest.”

The team will get a good amount of rest, according to Kelly, “They will get Wednesday through Saturday - almost four days off - which is a pretty substantial break for them.”

Kelly touched on the importance of doing the right things during this later stretch of the season, “We need to stay healthy, continue to grow, and keep playing, prepare the right way, and see how it plays out.”

Let’s look at both sets of rankings after a wild weekend of football.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish escaped a close game against the unranked Pittsburgh Panthers with a 19-14 victory over the weekend. That, combined with losses by other teams in the top ten of both national rankings list, allowed the Irish to slightly improve their national ranking.

Georgia’s road loss to LSU moved them down from #3 to #6 this week. Ohio State, Clemson, and Notre Dame all won their games and moved up a spot to complete the top four. LSU’s big win moved them up from #13 to #5. Important victories for Texas, Michigan, and Oklahoma allowed them all to move into the top ten. UCF held steady at #9.

The hangover is under extreme pressure.

There were some rumblings across the college football world that this Saturday could be a special kind of Saturday. Still... I don’t think anyone was prepared for the type of day that it was going to become — least of all fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame was a 3 touchdown favorite against the Pittsburgh Panthers, but we found out pretty quickly that the spread Vegas gave us was going to get thrown out of the damn window.

Now, if you’re still feeling pretty crappy about that 19-14 win over Pitt, let me remind you what happened on Saturday:

#2 Lost

#3 Won kind of meh

#5 Hello ND

#6 Lost

#7 Lost

#8 Lost

#9 Close Win

#10 Close Win

So... four of the top eight lost, while 4 of the top 10 won close games (Ohio State was 2 scores... but meh). The only two not to be involved in this mess... Alabama and Clemson. The former still played the sloppiest game of its season, and the later had a bye.

It was SCARY AF SATURDAY. Notre Dame won, and we should be a lot happier than what we are probably feeling. 7-0 y’all.

2 PLAYS FOR 2 SCORES WAS SPECIAL

The Notre Dame defense actually played lights out today. Pitt scored two touchdowns today, and they were both directly related to something the special teams unit did. The first was the offsides call on Nicco Fertitta on a punt return. It kept the Pitt drive alive in the first quarter, and they punched it in the endzone.

The second was a kickoff return for touchdown by Maurice Ffrench at the start of the 3rd quarter.

AND THAT’S IT.

Pitt racked up a grand total of 242 yards. With no Troy Pride Jr. (ankle) today, their performance was more than acceptable.

2 MUCH PRESSURE

While it can certainly be said that the “pressure got to ND this week,” by those that follow the program, it was much more specific. The offensive line could not handle the different pressures, schemes, and blitz packages that Pitt was bringing regularly. At one point, I had flashbacks of a flying Ram Vela (Navy 2007) when Dennis Briggs cam flying in off the edge to sack Ian Book.

Pitt recorded 3 sacks, but somehow only managed 3 QB hurries. It felt like Ian Book was being pressured all game long, and perhaps that’s because he played like there was pressure around him when there wasn’t. That’s a credit to Pitt, but also an indictment of the Irish offensive line.

They have a lot to work on over the bye, and maybe that’s some movement along the line.

2 SEARCH

After two weeks of Dexter Williams heroics, the senior running back was shut down by the Pitt defense. Williams had 13 carries for 31 yards, and 2 receptions for 2 yards. Once again, the biggest culprit was the Irish offensive line. There were, basically, no running lanes to be found. I think we all kept waiting for Dexter to break one wide open — and yet it never came.

It really was one of those days that Notre Dame probably needed to throw more as Brian Kelly suggested in the post game presser. I really can’t believe I’m agreeing with that, but the best way to beat all that pressure from Pitt’s front 7 (and 8) would be to use some screens.

That could have been Dexter’s big breaks for the game — but Notre Dame can’t run a screen to its running backs to save its life or its season.

2 LEGIT PLAYERS

Even with all of the frustrating play during the game, there were two players that stood out the most against Pitt.

Miles Boykin. The Book to Boykin combo still proves deadly, and Miles caught 4 balls for 84 yards and that TD.

Julian Okwara. The Irish defense had an astonishing 10 quarterback hurries against the Panthers, and Julian had SEVEN of them. YO! He also had a pass break-up and 6 tackles.

MORE THINGS 2 SAY

Freshman cornerback, Tariq Bracy, was second on the team in tackles with seven. Six of those were solo tackles. Well done.

Chase Claypool showed incredible effort on that TD reception. It was a nice route, and he exploded up the seam after the catch to get in the endzone. MAPLE BANDIT!

As poor as the special teams were today, Notre Dame’s defense made a great special teams play by totally snuffing out the fake punt towards the end of the game.

Somehow I still haven’t mentioned Chris Finke with his 6 grabs for 62 yards. He was clutch (except for that one drop).

7-0.
