Don’t miss out on ANYTHING!

We are about to begin another football season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and this season has a whopping <s>seven games</s> six games at home. That’s <s>seven weekends</s> six weekends of sightseeing, tailgating, and college football worship that is unlike any other school in the country.

With the storied tradition of Notre Dame Football and a large fanbase, trips to Notre Dame for game day weekends should be some of the most treasured memories of a fan’s life. I often take it for granted that I have attended so many games over the years; I know that many only make it a few times in their lives. If you’re going to go this year, we don’t want you to miss anything.

This is also for any fan of the teams that Notre Dame is playing this year. The University of Notre Dame is a landmark for college football fans, and with each game in South Bend, you will see thousands of people flocking there to witness all that the school has to offer.

Much of this information comes from Notre Dame’s GAME DAY website. I highly encourage you to visit that site as well. This is more of my personal take on the whole experience.

THE BASICS OF BEING THERE

Before we get into all of the other stuff, you need to get there and know what is allowed.

PARKING

First things first, right... you have to find a spot to park. If you have a parking pass for one of the campus lots (Joyce, Stadium, Bookstore, etc.) the pass will have most of the information on the back side.

The two most common parking lots for “off campus” parking are White Field (off Douglas Road) and Burke Golf Course (off Angela Blvd.). White will cost $30 and Burke will cost $40.

Not only is White Field cheaper, it also has a shuttle service to and from campus.

TAILGATING

Although there are various places to park, the university rules for tailgating are the same for all.

NO amplified sound –- speakers that stand alone, are excessively loud or are connected to an amplifier

NO box trucks, motorcycles, or oversized vans

NO charcoal grills

NO deep fryers

NO drones

NO kegs

NO open flames (e.g. fire pits)

NO propane cylinders larger than 20 lbs.

Propane grills are permitted, but gas cylinders must be under 20 lbs.

Tents and canopies are allowed

WHAT TO SEE

This is where things get tricky. Not because it’s hard to find things around campus, but because there is so much to see. It can be a little overwhelming for first-time visitors to see it all and do it all, but if you give yourself enough time, it is possible to see most of what Notre Dame has to offer.

Here is a map of campus with a link to a pdf for closer examination:

TOUCHDOWN JESUS

Please keep in mind that this is also called The Hesburgh Library and The Word of Life mural. Aside from the golden dome atop the Main Building, it’s probably the most iconic landmark on campus, and you’ll surely want a picture of yourself in front of it.

THE BASILICA

Even if you’re not Catholic, and even if you’re not a Christian, you absolutely must see the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It is an absolutely beautiful place, and for first-time visitors, it will honestly take your breath away.

THE GROTTO

Located behind the basilica on the northwest side, people constantly name the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes their favorite place on campus. With all that goes on during game day, there is still a quiet aura that surrounds the place. Just be there for a few minutes and you’ll understand.

Twitter

The Grotto

THE BOOKSTORE

There is an aura here too, but it’s much more like Wall Street. You simply have to go once, just to witness the incredible chaos that develops here on a game day. There are plenty of other places on campus to buy merchandise, but this one comes with a merit badge for surviving.

JOYCE CENTER

Visit the basketball arena during a football game? YES. The Joyce Center is home to quite a few things, including the Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. The hall is located on the upstairs concourse, and displays all of the trophies and other tokens from all of Notre Dame’s incredible history. Every name of every Monogram winner is engraved in that space.

THE STATUES

While these are spread out around campus, you really need to seek them out by keeping an eye out along your way. “We’re #1” Moses, “Fair Catch” Corby, Moose Krause and the Championship Coaches are among the most popular.

GRACE HALL

The #1 sign that sits atop Grace Hall is lit any time ANY Notre Dame athletic team is ranked No. 1 in the country. Obviously, there is a special place in our hearts for the football program, and when Notre Dame got to No. 1 in 2012, I almost drove up with fellow OFDer Wes Sweigert just to see it lit. (We didn’t, because we were a little too intoxicated to drive).

WHAT TO WATCH

Besides all of the landmarks on campus, there are tons of other happenings going on around campus leading up to the game. Due to three different kickoff times this year, the times for these events vary. I’ll do you a solid and list them for each kickoff time.

There are all sorts of things going on Fridays before home games as well.

Get Your Pep Rally On

Things start at the Main Building, with Trumpets Under The Dome at 4:10 PM. Then, the Notre Dame Marching Band begins on the steps of the Main Building at 4:30. The band marches to the pep rally location, and then the rally starts at 6:00.

You can take a tour of the Gug, the tunnel and campus on Fridays. If you want to spend more of your Saturday tailgating and just having fun, the Friday tours are an excellent way to go if you are up there.

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS

Each experience at Notre Dame is unique, so please ask around if you haven’t been there before. In fact, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask in the comments below. I, or any number of OFD readers, will be able to give you an honest answer to better help you enjoy your time at Notre Dame.

I should be at all of the Notre Dame football games this fall in the press box. I get bored up there before the game. If this little guide helped you in any way, and you want to say hello, give me a shout on Twitter either @onefootdown or @TheSubwayDomer and I’d be happy to shake your hand and share a cold drink (or a warm one in November).

If I’m to believe the stats, then it’s all the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish won a top-10 matchup last Saturday night in Notre Dame Stadium over the then-seventh ranked Stanford Cardinal in very, very convincing fashion. As is tradition, I will now dig into the stats and see just how genuine that win was and just how good or bad Notre Dame can be.

Here we go.

Stats That Lie

The only thing that stands out to me as potentially misleading looking back at the box and summaries for this game is that, early in the fourth quarter following a Justin Yoon missed field goal, the game was 24-17. Given what we saw from that point out (Stanford went three-and-out on their next drive and Notre Dame promptly scored, cueing the onslaught), the narrative of absolutely punishing Stanford makes way more sense.

But you’d think a Notre Dame team that ended up with such a dominant advantage in nearly every statistical category would have been up by two scores or more at that point.

Stats That Don’t

From what I can see, the rest.

Everything in the box score down to TOP (34:23 - 25:37 in favor of the Irish) indicates a butt whoopin’. Notre Dame out-gained the Cardinal on offense 550-229. That’s right, the Notre Dame offense traveled twice the distance as the Stanford offense and then said “screw it” and went 102 more yards just for fun.

The Notre Dame defense held the Stanford Offense to only 55 yards on the ground. That’s just remarkable, and is further vindication of what we already thought we knew about this defense: they are very good. Another 17 point performance on the night. They also forced a turnover.

Miles Boykin caught the ball 11 times for 144 yards and a touchdown, which reinforces another idea we were toying with early in the season. The Notre Dame receiving weapons can be really good if a quarterback could get them the ball. That quarterback is Ian Book, who further solidified himself as the answer with a 24/33 night for 278 yards and four touchdowns.

Dexter Williams was also back from the suspension in a big way.

He was given the ball 21 times and ran for 161 yards and a touchdown. Maybe only having one touchdown is a bit of a liar, seeing as it was his first touch of the season? I wouldn’t go that far, though. Dexter still had a very, very good night.

That’s really all I can give ya, folks. The stats say the Irish are good on both sides of the ball against a then top-10 team at home, and I think they just may be telling the truth.

However, don’t mark me down as a believer in an undefeated season and CFP berth yet. The Irish have to play on the road in a great atmosphere at Virginia Tech next weekend, so we’ll see how Brian Kelly has adjusted his big-road-night-game preparation strategy after what happened against the Miami Hurricanes last year.

If the Irish dominate again next weekend, then we only need to worry about playing Pitt with a high rank. Should be fun.

He fills more requirements than you think...

Notre Dame’s victory over Stanford may have been Brian Kelly’s biggest accomplishment to date. Currently, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are undefeated, in possession of all 6 rivalry trophies, and holds a slew of records. Brian Kelly beat the Cardinal. If you’re one better than a Cardinal, doesn’t that make you the Pope?

Here is what 16 years of a Catholic education plus a google search taught me about the requirements to become the Pope:

Be Catholic

Be a man

Brian Kelly fulfills both of those requirements. Kelly is the controversial, yet supreme leader of one of the Catholic Church’s largest institutions: Notre Dame football. He also administers the Eucharist, as demonstrated below.

Notre Dame finally beat a top-10 opponent in primetime. There were a lot of fun plays, like Dexter William’s opening touchdown run and Jerry Tillery’s four monster sacks. BUT THIS SHOVEL PASS WAS THE BEST PLAY OF THE ENTIRE GAME.

I could watch that play on repeat every day for the next 100 years and it wouldn’t get old. That’s without even mentioning that this throw was in garbage time and was to a 4th string running back. Speaking of garbage time, Notre Dame had the opportunity to kick a field goal or try to score another touchdown at the end of the game, but since Brian Kelly is such a nice, merciful man, he decided to call for the kneel down instead.

DAVID SHAW HATES THE BAND

Here is a neat little tidbit I found out this weekend thanks to an anonymous source with close ties to the Notre Dame Marching Band, reminiscing on the 2016 Stanford-Notre Dame game.

David Shaw has always had a problem with our band. Every year he complains to the officials that we play too long. The NCAA rule states that we are allowed to play until the QB goes under center. This causes problems for teams that like to play call in a hurry up. Back in 2016, the band used to be in the current away tunnel corner on the field. We had two massive speaker towers. One pointed towards the middle of the field for goal line stands. The other pointed towards the away sideline. I turned around and saw a Stanford grad assistant of some sort crouched down over our wires behind the tower. I was a band manager as well so I was extremely familiar with the sound systems. I tapped the state trooper and pointed the guy out. He started laughing and said, “One second.” He walks over to the guy and yells, “Hey! What’re doing over there?” The Stanford guy looks up and immediately became super nervous. He said, “Uh... Uh... I dropped something.” The trooper then said, “Sure ya did. Get back in the box.”

This begs the question, do opposing fanbases hate playing at Notre Dame?! Or does David Shaw just hate the array of Bon Jovi/Irish folk music that the Notre Dame marching band plays. In two years when Stanford returns to Notre Dame Stadium, we should all be on guard for David Shaw Band Watch TM.

Speaking of the band...this is incredible and there needs to be a video of it online ASAP.

Unless you hammered one out over the past two nights, Saturday night should be you answer, WOW... Ian Book was pretty incredible, and it’s kind of hard to sum up exactly what he means to this offense and this team now. Against Stanford, Book threw for 278 yards with a 73% completion percentage. He connected with TEN different receivers, and Book’s 4 touchdown passes went to 4 different players (Nic Weishar, Chase Claypool, Miles Boykin, and Alize Mack).

This offense is so diverse thanks to Book and offensive coordinator Chip Long, that defenses will have (as they have shown already) a difficult time trying to lock in on anything. Book was also the second leading rusher on Saturday night with 47 yards to add to the 272 yard output on the ground.

It’s no longer a theory, and it’s no longer a guess... Ian Book is so good — like for real you guys. I highly recommend one on your trip to Virginia.

Jerry Tillery hasn’t received the type of praise he should this year for the job he has done. Against Stanford, he completely took over and it wasn’t just the sack (4 of them y’all) it was the way he split the double teams, the other quarterback hurries he created, and his ability to help make the rest of a really good Irish defensive line better.

This rotation they have going on with Tillery, Kurt Hinish, Khalid Kareem, Daelin Hayes, Jonathan Bonner, Julian Okwara, and Ade Ogundeji has literally been a game changer. Even back in 2012 Notre Dame wasn’t this deep along the defensive line. With fresher legs, and a lot of talent, this unit has took over football games — especially the one played last Saturday night.

It seems as if anytime we (or anyone else for that matter) start talking about the possibilities for this season, people want to start shouting ONE GAME AT A TIME or HOLD YOUR HORSES or whatever else they can think of to make themselves feel better.

I am not a player and I am not the coach. I will shout from here to there... this is a damn good football team, and 12-0 is certainly attainable. There are still plenty of obstacles on the path:

5 of the last 7 games are on the road.

The USC Trojans would love some revenge.

Playing Navy still sucks.

The Syracuse Orange are a good team — and hey there Yankee Stadium.

Injuries.

It’s that last one that is starting to chip away at the Irish, and although Notre Dame has been able to absorb the blows so far, it might only take one more to really put this team in danger and help cause a loss.

And OH YEAH... the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg at night.

It’s still a difficult road, but one that the Irish can navigate (albeit very cautiously). So, if you want to talk about it, I’m here for you. What difference does it make anyways? We talk about things like this in the preseason all the time, and this is just an extension of that.

Some stunning images from a brilliant night.

One of the exciting things about One Foot Down’s coverage of Notre Dame football this season is the addition of Michael Miller as our official photographer. Michael is a local of the South Bend area and has been heavily involved in taking Notre Dame athletic photos over the years.

He’s also a top-notch photographer for hire, and has an impressive gallery of wedding photos and the like as well. Check him out over at his site: Michael Miller Photography.

Can the Irish continue to march without its best offensive lineman?

WELCOME to the 5-0 Bagpipe Monday on One Foot Down! Friends, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have looked incredible since the insertion of Ian Book as the starting quarterback. For the season, Book is 52 of 70 for 616 yards 7 touchdowns with 0 interceptions.

@phillykelly

People are getting pretty giddy about the rest of the season and what this team could accomplish. Besides the invigorating passing game, the running game has been really good and the defense is only giving up 18 points a game. So yeah... the future is bright.

This incredible start hasn’t been without its share of casualties along the way.

Notre Dame is starting to look a little thin at running back again with injuries to Jafar Armstrong (knee infection) and Tony Jones Jr. (ankle). The addition of Dexter Williams against Stanford was exactly what this offense needed, but they will definitely need to see some involvement from Avery Davis, and the freshman backs; Jahmir Smith and C’bo Flemister.

The biggest hit though was the guy that protects Book and paves the way for the backs, and that’s Alex Bars. The loss of Alex for the season due to a knee injury is HUGE in my eyes. Bars hasn’t been on the same level as Quenton Nelson was last season, but he has definitely had his moments and had been playing really good football this season.

With so many hopes and dreams on the line for the Irish, how big of a loss is Alex right now? Notre Dame has already dipped into their reserves along the line for various reasons, and the depth has been decently good, but can they step up for the remainder of the season in bigger roles?

Notre Dame has a really tough matchup coming up with the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg. Given that incredible environment (and at night) will a Notre Dame offensive line without Alex Bars be good enough to continue to play at the level that they have been playing over the last two weeks?

Guys like Trevor Ruhland, Josh Lugg, and Aaron Banks will be called upon for more minutes now, so are they up to the task? Just think about that for a few minutes (and try not to drink). I have a lot of confidence in them as they rotate in during the game, but we still have to see them as these roles become increased dramatically.

Before I end this, I want to make sure it’s put out there that Alex bars has been a great offensive lineman for Notre Dame over the years, a captain, and a wonderful representative for the University. He has a bright future ahead of him, and we should all thank him and hope for the best for Alex in the future after this really tough break.

Enjoy the pipes!

These are so fun to write following big time wins.

Another week, another great performance from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. The Irish are now 5-0 after a 38-17 victory over the Stanford Cardinal. It was clear that Notre Dame was the superior team in every facet of the game. The offense was humming, and the defense made many key stops. Overall, it was the best team performance of the year.

Dexter Williams

Welcome back, Dex! The most explosive offensive weapon finally returned after a four-game suspension. And did he return in a big way. Williams’ first touch of the season was a 45-yard touchdown run. He finished the game with 161 yards, while averaging 7.7 yards per carry. Yes, that will do just fine. It is great to have you back. Mr. Dexter Williams.

Jerry Tillery

The most dominant man on the football field just might have been #99 Jerry Tillery. He was the definition of unblockable on Saturday night. Interior defensive linemen are not supposed to sack the quarterback like Jerry Tillery did last weekend. He was causing havoc for the whole Stanford offensive line. He finished the game with 4 sacks and a forced fumble. The Irish defense is scary good with a guy in the middle like Jerry Tillery.

Alex Bars

If you have not heard yet, Alex Bars is out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL, which he suffered on Saturday. I figured I would give the 5th year senior captain some love in what proved to be his final game for Notre Dame. He was anchoring a fast-improving offensive line. It is almost night and day from the Ball State game until now. Bars was the heart and soul of the offensive line. He was having a great year and will be missed up front. Best wishes to Alex Bars for a speedy recovery.

Notre Dame will now go on the road to play in Blacksburg, Virginia where they match up with the Virginia Tech Hokies. A night game in Blacksburg will be a tough game regardless of how talented Virginia Tech is right now. We all remember what happened last year when the Irish went on the road to play a night game against Miami. Totally unprepared and scared. Next Saturday will be a huge test to see how good Notre Dame really is this season.
