Damn you Sciba Steve!!!

Good evening. Notre Dame is 4-0, beautiful autumnal leaves are falling, and Tiger Woods is the Tour Champion. But this is Stanford week so I hate trees, Tiger is dead to me, and all I want to do is dissect plays from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish - Wake Forest Demon Deacons game until I have lulled myself into a false sense of confidence before Saturday night. Let’s start by breaking down the highlight of the game, Wake Forest’s kicker forgetting to, well, kick.

Part One: Fourth down

In this image, we see that it is 4th down and Wake Forest is not going for it, demonstrated by the quarterback high-fiving special teams players while he runs toward the sideline.

Part 2: The clock ticks

via ABC

The camera cuts from the quarterback jogging off the field, to Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clausen on the sideline, then, incriminatingly, to Wake’s kicker ALSO on the sideline.

What is this guy doing?! The answer may shock you.

Part 3: Confusion

It is here we learn that Wake Forest’s kicker’s name is Nick Sciba, aka Sciba Steve. The camera stays on Sciba Steve for a long 5 seconds while he appears to look at the field, think to himself, “Hmm nothing to see there,” and then bends over with a football cradled his arms.

Back and to the left... Back and to the left.

This downward motion proves to us that Sciba Steve is bending over to take another practice kick on the sidelines. That, my friends, is nothing to be ashamed of. That is dedication to one’s craft. Sciba Steve might have forgotten to pay attention to what down it was, but he was doing so while perfecting his kicking motion and proving to his coach one last time that he was ready for the spotlight.

During this part of the broadcast, Sean McDonough reveals some important facts:

“They have a freshman field goal kicker. He’s been solid but they’ve all been from close range. This is about the extent where Dave Clausen says they might try one. They went for it on 4th down seven times last week against Boston College.

Wake Forest went for it on 4th down SEVEN times against Boston College. There was no way Sciba Steve could have anticipated they’d kick a field goal, especially knowing that his coach would be calling an aggressive game plan against a top 10 team. This is hardly Sciba Steve’s fault. Sure, the rest of the special teams unit got the memo that Wake was kicking a field goal, but it’s not like the holder has anything to practice while he’s on the sidelines. Sciba Steve has a reason to be distracted. He’s practicing, like any good kicker would.

Part 4: Assigning the blame

So whose fault is it really that Sciba Steve wasn’t on the field? Was it his goody-two-shoes, suck-up teammates who hustled to the line of scrimmage to show off how smart they are and lined up for the play before he even got the chance to count his little steps backwards and do some practice swings? Look at them all standing there with no regard for where their freshman kicker is. The selfishness. The disrespect.

After the holder gingerly plants his knee on the ground, he finally looks up and realizes tat there’s no one behind him. Oh sure, NOW you care.

Part 5: The aftermath

Our man HUSTLES onto the field for the kick. I can assure you no one has ever run faster in their life. There’s still 19 seconds on the clock, too! He has plenty of time! Notice here that Wake Forest has 3 timeouts and could have saved Sciba Steve some humiliation if they had called one. But they didn’t. Because they didn’t have to. Because Sciba Steve made it out with seconds to spare, dammit.

I am calling for everyone to stop shaming Sciba Steve for forgetting to go on the field. He was busy practicing kicks on the sidelines, thought that Wake would go for it because his head coach doesn’t appreciate him, had zero help from his teammates, and despite all of this made it onto the field with plenty of time to spare.

Oh...but yea, he did miss the kick.

A few things about the game:

After a couple shaky series, Notre Dame’s offense gained some momentum and dominated the game. Don’t let Brian Kelly get all the credit for being sooo smart for benching the starting quarterback of a 3-0 team in week 4 and pretending like he knew Ian Book was going to go off against Wake Forest. I’m not convinced Wake is even decent this year. They couldn’t beat Boston College, a team that lost to Purdue (enough said), and their only two wins have been against Tulane and Towson. Not really a sterling resume.

It was nice to see Notre Dame not play down to their competition, even if it took about a quarter to get there. I’m not here to make an argument for either quarterback to start the rest of the season, but I am here to read your Ian Book puns.

Notre Dame scored so many points that Wake Forest fired their defensive coordinator after the game. Remember when Notre Dame lost to a different North Carolina school and then... nevermind.

Wake Forest’s Demon Deacon mascot is terrifying...ly slow on his motorcycle. You know it’s dangerous to drive under the speed limit right my dude?

The answer is definitively “we don’t even know if he can beat Stanford yet”

Talk of the playoffs is picking up due in large part to meteoric rise in Notre Dame’s offensive production under the command of Ian Book against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. It is true, the point total was remarkable and Book’s passing statistics were gaudy. However, it is probably fair to call Wake Forest’s defense “trash” and we debate how much stock can be put into this game.

Always fun to do this after an offensive explosion.

What a game. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish offense carried them to a 56-27 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. It was wonderful to watch. So many guys on offense touched the ball and made plays. It was shocking to see how bad Wake Forest looked on defense. They looked lost and were missing tackles left and right. Just zero fundamentals from the Demon Deacons. I credit the Notre Dame players and coaches for taking advantage of an obvious weakness. On to the player performances:

Ian Book

How could you start anywhere else? He played a fantastic game and showed off his strengths. He is a very accurate passer 15 yards and in. Book was making plays with his legs too. He is not Brandon Wimbush running, but is definitely above average. His final stat line was 25-34 for 326 yards and 5 total touchdowns. Yes, I know Wake Forest played some of the worst pass defense college football has ever seen. But this is why Brian Kelly made the switch. Book’s strength is precision passing and Wake’s weakness was defending it. Credit goes to the Irish coaching staff for using the strengths of all their players.

Alize Mack

He might be the happiest guy in the world to see Ian Book at quarterback. Mack thrives in crossing patterns and making touch catches in traffic over the middle of the field. That plays right into Ian Book’s repertoire. Alize Mack finished the game with 6 catches for 61 yards. Also, people do not talk about how good of a blocker Mack has become. He is turning into a complete football player. Mack has crazy potential and it is starting to show.

Julian Okwara

About two years ago, the defensive line play was easily the weakest spot on the team. Now? It might be the strongest unit on the team. Partly due to the emergence of Julian Okwara. He seems to be in the backfield on every third down. Okwara’s final stat line was 1 sack and 3.5 tackles for a loss. He is a pass rush specialist. Plain and simple, Okwara knows how to get after the quarterback. Even when he’s not sacking the quarterback, he is collapsing the pocket and causing havoc. Exactly what you want a pass rusher to do.

Moving Forward

If you take a look at Notre Dame’s schedule, it is safe to say that Stanford is the toughest matchup. Virginia Tech just lost by two touchdowns to Old Dominion. Pittsburgh lost to previously winless North Carolina. The rest of the Irish opponents seem to be getting worse every week.

Stanford comes to Notre Dame Stadium with a 4-0 record this week. Buckle up, I think we will be in for a good one.

We certainly turned the page

What a Novel Game!

Keep them coming, folks. The Book puns are sticking around for a while!

Finally, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish we have been looking for. That game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, minus a slow start in the first quarter, was more of a game we were anticipating from the Irish. A dominant win, but that still comes from some thoughts from everyone. Here are three of mine.

I was wrong!

Yes, I am admitting it. I really don’t care that I was wrong because I’m just glad the Irish won handily. I agreed that the Irish should’ve continued with Brandon Wimbush as the starter. I thought I was right, and I was forseeing this game to be a huge problem.

I was a bit on edge/ way too jumpy with my conclusions in the first quarter. I admit it was an overreaction to the slow play and the first time we had trailed in the season.

I still agree with consistency, so Ian Book should probably start and continue as the guy going forward. With a Top 10 matchup against the Stanford Cardinal later this week, consistency and confidence are going to be helpful. I am weary that it was only Wake Forest, because they were riding the struggle bus (I felt so bad for Hartman, he was getting demolished out there). However, poise and control will help especially with two very tough opponents coming up in the next two weeks. I still stand by that we didn’t have enough of a sample size for Ian Book to start, but now we do. HUGE credit to Ian for the way he played, especially unexpectedly using his feet and mobility well.

Brandon Wimbush still needs to play.

Yes, he still needs to be in the offensive scheme. Not as the main quarterback. I understand what the coaching staff was doing going strictly with Book, and I loved the consistency. Regardless, going forward it would be great to see Wimbush run some wildcat or even set up in the backfield maybe to run in the slot. I would even like to see if he could line up out wide, too. His speed and athleticism can be used, and they need to be used to continue offensive production. Even with dropping 50+, you could tell Wimbush’s running ability was missed out there. The Irish need that going forward. It’s too bad we can’t put Ian Book’s arm/poise with Wimbush’s speed. That would be ideal. We can’t have that, but their talent can be utilized effectively.

But actually, enjoy this one, Irish fans. We all finally can enjoy a dominant game that was relatively stress free. I consider the game against Michigan a dominant game, but it had stress of being big time. As we have seen, winning is not easy to do. Just ask Oregon or Virginia Tech. Once again, the Irish got it done against an opponent they were supposed to beat. Continuing to do that in any way can show great success. Clearly, two of the toughest tests of the season are coming up in back to back weeks, but I believe the performance on Saturday was more like the team that we should see. This game on Saturday helped give us all life that this team could succeed for the rest of the season. It’s all good.

They aren’t just freshmen, they’re FRESH, MAN.

No one really saw this coming for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Many were using this game as their “upset special” of the week, and even those that picked the Irish to win, had them winning by a touchdown or less.

It was like the Irish were going to play Alabama instead of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Well — maybe not that bad, but the fear of playing a middle-of-the-road ACC team was becoming a bit unbearable.

THE DEFENSE PLAYED JUST FINE!

I saw too many people during the game, and after the game, complain about the defense. This reaction surprised me and made me wonder if people weren’t seeing the same type of game that I was on Saturday.

Wake Forest plays some pretty good offensive football, and their uptempo style is a system that can cause a few issues against anyone. They also had a real playmaker in Greg Dortch that had the ability to change the scope of the game with the ball in his hands.

Notre Dame was looking to not just stop the passing game, but to minimize what Greg Dortch would do in the game — and it worked almost perfectly. Wake was 16-31 passing for just 139 yards. Sam Hartman was harassed all day as he was sacked 3 times and threw an interception. He was, essentially, knocked out of the game as he took hit after hit after hit.

It was quite apparent that Notre Dame was kind of selling out on the pass, and even started the game in the Nickel with freshman Houston Griffith getting the start there. They also used a LOT of substitutions. Freshmen like Bo Bauer, Justin Ademilola, Jayson Ademilola, and Griffith were used heavily. Drue Tranquill and Te’von Coney finally got some bench time.

Yes, the 259 yards rushing was less than ideal — but given the circumstances, and what the Irish came to do... it was absolutely fine. Plus... that walking-option was just a rough play to defend [insert lol emoji].

27 points? Add all of the other reasons up and then throw in the 56 points Notre Dame scored, and that 27 is just another number to sneeze at.

THE RUNNING GAME IS STILL THE FOCUS HOORAY!

You could count me in as one of those that was worried that the Irish would lean more on their passing game with Ian Book as the starter. Regardless of who is calling the plays (it’s Chip Long btw) it has been a Kelly trait to unload the quarterback’s arm when possible.

Against Wake, I thought they did a wonderful job of mixing up the playcalls. The run to pass ratio was 40-36, but how they used both was the happier substance.

Most coaches like to use one to set up the other, but on Saturday, it really seemed as if the playcalling was so on point, that it didn’t matter what they did so set up whatever. It was another 240+ yard day on the ground, and that was with 325 yards in the air. How many times could we say that in the last decade? Notre Dame threw for over 300 yards AND rushed for over 200? Not many.

Both Jafar Armstrong and Tony Jones Jr. have become better running backs since week one, and it really showed against Wake. Even Avery Davis, who saw a lot more action this week, looked like he has made significant progress in his development. Add those three with the return of Dexter Williams this week, and the Irish look to have quite the powerful and explosive backfield. It could be almost Holtzian in nature.

A FEW MORE QUICK THOUGHTS!

The quick change defense the Irish played after the fumble was brilliant. They escaped with a missed field goal try, and you can’t really ask for more than that.

Alize Mack deserves a lot of love. After a week defending his knees, he comes up with a 6 catch performance that really spotlighted what he does best.

Jalen Elliott continues to surprise and Alohi Gilman continues to impress. Both played great on Saturday, and both were the leading tacklers on defense.

I love that Notre Dame continues to include Kevin Austin, and that should help tremendously later in the year.

FULLBACK TOUCHDOWN Brock Wright. Seriously... an online petition needs to go around to get him to change to a more fullback friendly number.

Trevor Ruhland played really well in place of Tommy Kraemer (ankle) but expect more of Tommy this week.

Did I mention Dexter Williams returns this week?

Kind of a tough break for Michael Young to have that fumble. He’s showing a lot of playmaking skill, and his 66 yard catch and run was further proof.

ON TO STANFORD!

The Irish ushered in a new era, and it looked very promising.

The Next Chapter

It was a poorly kept secret in the week leading up to the game in Winston Salem. In their first away game, it would be Ian Book - not Brandon Wimbush - leading the Notre Dame Fighting Irish against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

In turning the page on Brandon Wimbush, the Irish began a new chapter in which Ian was the protagonist - all puns most definitely intended.

Coming into this week, Notre Dame ‘s last 5 wins had an average score of 23-17 - Wimbush leading in 4 of those wins, the lone outlier being the Citrus Bowl win over LSU in which Book was effectively the starter.

At the half, Book had led this team to a 28-13 lead. They scored more points in one half with Ian Book than they had scored in an entire game with Wimbush.

Brian Kelly worded it perfectly during his Sunday Teleconference: “What did he do well? He put points on the board.”

He most certainly did. It was a thing of beauty.

They carved through a weak Wake Forest defense en route to a 56-27 shellacking.

The story of this Notre Dame team all year had been a stout defense, but not this time. It was not Brandon Wimbush’s benching, it was not Phil Jurkovec’s first game action, and it was not Jafar Armstrong’s explosive display.

No, it was time for Book to step into the spotlight.

Needless to say, he delivered. With 325 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air, and another 43 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, Book made a statement against Wake Forest:

It’s my turn.

It was a fantastic day for the new Notre Dame starting quarterback and for Notre Dame fans across the country.

It must be noted, however, that if this is Ian Book’s turn in the story, the Wake Forest game was simply a prologue. An introduction to the main character, if you will.

If this is to be a “storybook” season in which the former backup gives a jolt of life to a formerly dominant program, the tale truly begins next weekend against seventh-ranked Stanford Cardinals.

And fans across the country will be watching - on the edge of their seats - to see how this new chapter continues.

Other Notes from the Teleconference:

Injury notes: Kraemer rolled his ankle prior to the game so Ruhland started, and Cole Kmet was still recovering from his injury against Ball State. Both should be back against Stanford. Ja’Mion Franklin will receive an MRI for a “quad tendon injury”.

In regards to Dexter Williams: “I would expect him to do something for us this week.” We here at One Foot Down are desperately trying to contain our excitement.

Kelly denied having planned this “coming out party” for Book, “ I can’t tell you we are that smart to have a master plan to unleash Ian Book in week four against Wake Forest.”

“Our team was maturing and things were falling into place,” Kelly stated, describing what led to Book taking over, “... As we got into last week, after talking with the offensive staff, I felt it was time to make a move on Ian Book.”

On Jafar Armstrong, “I love his competitive spirit... He can take 100 snaps if thats what [is] needed. He’s in such great physical condition... He loves football. He gets you excited to come to work every day.”

Bryce Love isn’t all that Kelly is concerned about with Stanford: “Stanford is a very good football team. They have a number of good receivers who can get the football. KJ Costello is playing outstanding... We have a lot to overcome. We have to be ready for them.”

Kelly touched on the recruiting process with Book: “He was efficient in everything he did - captain, high percentage, won games, could run the football... We felt like Ian Book was that guy who could really facilitate and lead.”

“Brandon knows he’ll contribute,” Kelly assured, in regards to keeping Wimbush engaged, “...We will ensure he is prepared every week, just like Ian was prepared.”

Kelly praised Trevor Ruhland, “I liked the way he played... He fit very well against Wake Forest. especially when they played a lot of 7-technique. He moves a little better than Tommy does.”

Some freshman impressed Kelly on Saturday, “The Ademilola twins, really pleased with their suddenness and how hard they play... We always notice the receivers catching the ball, but Kevin Austin blocking and getting after guys on the perimeter was very impressive... TaRiq Bracy on special teams: outstanding.”

Shutting Greg Dortch down was integral to the defensive gameplan, “We frustrated Dortch. That really limited what they were able to do.”

On Avery Davis’s play: “Avery hadn’t been given much of an opportunity... He just needs game reps... He still has to understand how to finish runs, so do Jafar and Tony. He can compliment guys really well. There will be a role for him.”
