On Monday, 3-Star safety Kennedy Urlacher gave his public commitment to Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame Football. Kennedy is the son of former Chicago Bears linebacker legend, Brian Urlacher.

Kennedy chose the Irish over five other finalists in the Miami Hurricanes, TCU Horned Frogs, Penn State Nittany Lions, Kansas State Wildcats, and Illinois Fighting Illini. The 6’0 190 pounder from Chandler, Arizona, also held notable offers from the Iowa Hawkeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, and Washington Huskies.

Given his father’s path from New Mexico safety to NFL All-Pro linebacker, there has been a lot of speculation about Kennedy’s future position in college. Some believe that he could be developed into a ROVER-like linebacker, but all of that will likely depend on how he develops and grows over the next few years.

Urlacher is the 13th commitment for Notre Dame’s 2024 recruiting class — a class that is now represented by 10 different states and is ranked #5 according to the 247 Team Composite Rankings.

Kennedy is the lone safety commitment right now in a class in which the Irish need at least two — maybe three (in my opinion).

Even with the need, Notre Dame doesn’t appear to be in the running for very many safety prospects in the 2024 class. I realize that taking a low 3-Star at a position of immense need isn’t always the most exciting thing in the world, but coaching and development can make that attitude change down the road.
