Winning time

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are headed to its third straight Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament after taking down the Ole Miss Rebels, 71-56.

From the ND press release via Ashton Pollard:

Make that three consecutive Sweet 16 appearances for Notre Dame.

On Monday, No. 2 Notre Dame (28-6) used a stifling defensive performance and 50 perfect shooting performance from the floor to shut down No. 7 Ole Miss (24-9), 71-56. In doing so, The Irish advanced to the program’s third Sweet 16 in as many years and 20th overall in program history.

The “Big 3” led the way for Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Niele Ivey. Maddy Westbeld went 8-13 from the floor and dropped 20 points in an NCAA Tournament game for the second time in her career. Hannah Hidalgo had 19 points, and Sonia Citron put up her first double-double of the season with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Hidalgo and Citron were a combined 13-15 from the charity stripe.

As far as game flow goes, the Irish set the tone early and didn’t allow Ole Miss to crawl back within single-digits.

Notre Dame started hot, going 3-4 from the floor and putting together an 8-0 run against a stout Ole Miss defense. They made the Rebels uncomfortable on the other end of the floor and held them to a 2-7 start. Also of note, Ole Miss starting center Rita Igbokwe had a pair of fouls less than 5 minutes into the game.

The Irish kept their foot on the pedal to close out the first frame, going on an 11-3 run capped off by a Westbeld 3-pointer. She also had 2 blocks and 2 steals in the first 10. Ole Miss shot just 23.5 percent in Q1 and had 7 turnovers.

Ole Miss struggled to score to start the second quarter, as the Irish held them scoreless for 4 minutes. The Rebels started to see shots fall, but Notre Dame always had an answer. It was 43-26 in favor of the home team at the half, and the Irish made 16 of 27 shot attempts. Westbeld led all players with 14 points, while Citron and Hidalgo had 9 each. The nation’s steal leader, Hidalgo had 3 swipes at the break and had drawn 4 Ole Miss fouls. Three of the Rebels’ starters had 2 first half fouls.

The momentum carried out of the locker room as Citron drained a long 2-pointer on Notre Dame’s first possession. Notre Dame opened up the half 4-6 from the floor while holding Ole Miss to just two field goals in the first 5 minutes of play. The Notre Dame lead stretched as big as 23 before Ole Miss went on an 8-0 run of its own.

Back-to-back fast break layups with near-coast-to-coast passes from Citron to Hidalgo got the crowd on their feet as they erupted for Notre Dame’s 19-point lead with 1:30 left in the third. The Irish took a 61-42 advantage into the final frame.

Despite some late foul trouble, Notre Dame ran the clock in the fourth quarter and held on for the 15-point victory, 71-56.

The Irish will head to Albany later this week for a Sweet 16 clash against No. 3 Oregon State (26-7). The game will be Friday and the time is TBA.

Had to put the brooms away

The Notre Dame baseball team had a chance to sweep Miami this weekend but fell short on Sunday in extra innings.

From the ND press release via Claire Kramer:

Irish Drop Series Finale to Miami 12-10 in Extra Inning

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame (14-9, 2-7 ACC) dropped the series finale to Miami (13-10, 5-4 ACC) 12-10 in extra innings. The Irish pulled out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning, but an eight-run inning for Miami made the difference in the eventual Irish loss. Notre Dame moved to 2-1 on the series, their first ACC series win of the season.

Sunday’s game marked Notre Dame’s first extra-inning game of the season. Notre Dame’s last game that went to extras was May 16, 2023 vs. Northwestern at Wrigley Field (8-7 loss in 11 innings).

RHP Rory Fox earned the start for the Irish, going a career-high 4.0 innings, posting three strikeouts and allowing just one run. RHP Bennett Flynn (1-1) shouldered the loss for the Irish.

OF David Glancy had the offensive play of the day, with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to put the Irish up 7-1.

Over the course of the series, OF T.J. Williams led the starters with a .500 batting average, posting seven hits, five runs and five RBI, in addition to six putouts in center field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Miami led off the first with a double, and after two outs and a walk, Fox faced his fifth batter with runners at first and third. A fielder’s choice to INF Jack Penney ended the inning and held Miami away from home. The Irish were retired in order in the bottom half.

Fox posted two strikeouts in the second inning, with the Canes going three up, three down. OF Tito Flores notched a two-out double in the second, but a popout kept the Irish scoreless.

In the third, Miami singled to lead off, and a bunt single placed two runners aboard. A flyout pushed the lead runner to third, and a sac fly scored Miami’s first run of the day. A groundout sent the Irish up to bat. C Carson Tinney led off the bottom of the third with a double, and INF Estevan Moreno followed with a single. Moreno reached second on a passed ball, and Williams sent an infield single to score Tinney and even the game at 1-1. Glancy drew a HBP, and INF Connor Hincks hit into a fielder’s choice to score Moreno; on the throw back to first in an attempted double play, Miami posted an error, and Williams scored. The Irish ended the inning up 3-1.

Keeping the momentum, Fox and the Irish kept Miami from scoring in the fourth, with a double play on the third batter ending the inning. Flores led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and after a strikeout, Tinney walked. Another strikeout meant two outs for the Irish, as Wiliams followed with another single to load the bases. Glancy stepped to the plate and fired a 412-foot shot for a grand slam, putting the Irish up 7-1 to end the fourth.

Miami responded in dramatic fashion in the fifth, drawing a leadoff walk and following with a single to bring two runners aboard. RHP David Lally entered in relief of Fox. A walk loaded the bases with no outs, and a HBP brought in a run. Two infield balls brought in two more runs, while a groundout scored another. Another single scored Miami’s fourth run of the inning, and RHP Nate Hardman entered to take over on the mound. Miami’s next batter homered for three runs, and the Irish went to bat down 9-7. The Irish were unable to add any runs in the fifth.

The Irish sat the Canes down in order in the sixth, with Hardman earning a strikeout for the last out. Moreno drew a walk to lead off the sixth, reaching second on a passed ball. Williams walked, and Glancy hit into a fielder’s choice, tagging out Moreno. The Irish attempted a double steal, with Glancy reaching second and Williams tagged out at third, but a flyout ended the inning.

RHP Radek Birkholz entered to pitch for the Irish in the seventh, and both sides were retired in order in the inning. In the eighth, a HBP and walk put two runners on base, and a sac bunt moved both another base. Flynn entered to pitch, and a passed ball scored another run for Miami. Flynn earned a strikeout and was able to limit the damage, as the Irish went up to bat down 10-7.

DM Jefferson entered to pinch hit and singled to lead off the eighth, and C Joey Spence also entered to hit a single. After a strikeout, a Williams double scored Jefferson to pull within two. Glancy fired his second home run to even the score, his second homer of the day.

Both teams were held scoreless in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Miami led off the 10th inning by drawing a walk, the runner getting to second on a wild pitch and a sac bunt moving him to third. A single drove in Miami’s go-ahead run, and after another single, a sac fly scored an insurance run to put Miami up 12-10. Williams posted a two-out single in the 10th, but a strikeout ended the game with Notre Dame’s first home loss.

UP NEXT

Notre Dame will host Bowling Green on Tuesday, March 26, for a midweek game at 4:30 p.m. ET. The Irish will then head to Raleigh for a three-game series at NC State March 28-30. Thursday’s and Saturday’s games will be broadcast on ACCNX, while Friday’s game will be nationally televised on ACC Network.

Broom time?

After being swept in their first two ACC series of the season, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be looking to be on the right side of one on Sunday after taking down the Miami Hurricanes in the first two games.

GAME 1: Notre Dame 6, Miami 2

Notre Dame Downs Miami 6-2 For Conference Win

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame (13-8, 1-6 ACC) earned its first conference win in its first ACC game at home, grinding for a 6-2 victory over the visiting Miami Hurricanes (12-9, 4-3 ACC).

RHP Matt Bedford started on the mound for the Irish and delivered a career performance, posting seven strikeouts and staying on the mound for 4.1 innings, both career-high marks. Seven strikeouts ties Notre Dame’s season high by a single player (RHP Bennett Flynn also posted seven at Tennessee Tech - March 1). RHP Caden Spivey (1-0) earned the win for Notre Dame, pitching an effective 2.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts and no runs allowed, while Flynn closed it out for the Irish, posting three strikeouts over two innings.

Irish batters put together a true collective effort to secure the win with OF T.J. Williams, INF Jack Penney and C Joey Spence all posting multi-hit games, as Williams also earned two RBI. Notre Dame hit triples in three-consecutive innings, courtesy of Spence, Penney and OF David Glancy.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams went scoreless and hitless in the first. Miami led off the second with two doubles, the second scoring the Canes’ first run of the day. Bedford struck out the next batter for his first strikeout of the day, adding another strikeout and limiting the damage to one run. Notre Dame went three up, three down in the bottom of the second, holding the score at a 1-0 lead for Miami.

Bedford added three strikeouts in the third inning, holding Miami off the board, and Notre Dame went down in order in the third. Bedford posted two more strikeouts in the fourth, again keeping the Canes from scoring. Glancy earned a one-out walk in the fourth, but the Irish were unable to bring him home.

Bedford took the mound to begin the fifth inning, earning an out to set a career-high in innings pitched (4.1). Spivey entered to pitch for Notre Dame, striking out the first batter he faced, with a fly ball in center field ending the top of the inning.

Penney led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, but was tagged out on an OF Tito Flores fielder’s choice. Spence tripled, Notre Dame’s first of three triples on the day, to score Flores and tie up the game. OF Brady Gumpf followed, grounding out to shortstop but scoring Spence to take the lead. The Irish added two more hits, one from INF Estevan Moreno and one from Williams, but were unable to add more.

Spivey added another strikeout in the sixth, keeping the Irish momentum and holding Miami to a zero in the top half, and Penney tripled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but a flyout ended the inning.

With two outs in the seventh, Miami delivered two-consecutive singles, but Spivey and the Irish held them off again to keep the 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Spence led off with a single, and INF Casey Kmet entered to pinch run. After a foul-out, Kmet stole second, and a groundout gave the Irish two outs. Williams sent a single to center field to score Kmet, adding to the Irish lead. Glancy followed as the next batter, blasting a triple to right center field to score Williams. INF Connor Hincks stepped to the plate and sent a single to left center field to score Glancy, and INF Simon Baumgardt earned a walk to place two runners on base. A final strikeout ended the inning with a 5-1 Irish lead.

Flynn entered to pitch the eighth inning. Miami led off with a double, but Flynn struck out the next two batters. A single then scored another run for Miami. After a walk, Miami grounded out to Hincks, sending the Irish to bat with a 5-2 lead.

Flores and C Carson Tinney were the first batters of the inning at the plate for Notre Dame, both drawing walks. DM Jefferson entered at designated hitter, laying down a bunt and forcing an error to load the bases with zero outs. After a strikeout, Williams sent a grounder for an RBI, scoring Flores and adding to the lead.

Entering the ninth up 6-2, the Irish turned a 6-4-3 double play from Penney to Moreno to Hincks, and after a walk, Flynn struck out the last batter to keep the 6-2 win, posting Notre Dame’s first conference victory of the season.

GAME 2: Notre Dame 5, Miami 2

Notre Dame Secures Series with 5-2 Victory Over Miami

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame (14-8, 2-6 ACC) clinched the series with a 5-2 win over Miami (5-2, 4-4 ACC) Saturday, as RHP Jack Radel, RHP Ricky Reeth and the Irish defense locked it down in the field.

Reeth (1-2) earned the win, pitching a career-high 5.0 innings, while Radel started the game and matched a career-high 4.0 innings. Each gave up just one run.

INF Estevan Moreno made several impact plays on the day, posting four putouts and six assists from second base, also notching two doubles and an RBI. Moreno, DH Brady Gumpf and C Carson Tinney all had multi-hit games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Miami started off strong, drawing a leadoff walk and following with a single to place two runs on base. Another single pushed runners to second and third, but the batter was caught off base on his way to second, notching the first out of the inning. Miami’s third single of the inning scored the first run of the day. A fielder’s choice meant another out, and Radel struck out the last batter for the third out.

In the bottom of the inning, OF T.J. Williams and OF David Glancy both took HBP as the first two batters, and INF Connor Hincks laid down a sac bunt to push both runners into scoring position. INF Simon Baumgardt sent a fly ball to left field to score Williams and tie the game.

Radel and the Irish sat Miami down in order in the second with Radel adding a strikeout, as Moreno made an impressive grab to secure the second out. In the bottom of the inning, Tinney delivered a two-out single, and Moreno followed with a double to put both in scoring position, but a popup ended the inning.

Both teams went scoreless and hitless in the third. Miami led off the fourth with a single, and after two outs, the Canes drew a walk to place two runners on base. A lineout to Moreno ended the inning, holding Miami off the board for Radel’s third scoreless inning.

INF Jack Penney led off the fourth with a walk, and OF Tito Flores singled to push Penney to second. Gumpf sent an RBI double to score Penney, and the Irish took the lead. Tinney followed it up with a single to drive in Flores. After a double play, Williams singled to score Tinney, and the Irish ended the fourth inning up 4-1.

Reeth entered to pitch for the Irish to begin the fifth. Miami responded in the inning with a leadoff homer to cut the Irish lead to 4-2. Reeth struck out the next batter, and after two singles, a double play from Penney to Moreno to Hincks ended the inning. Notre Dame went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Reeth and the Irish held the Canes off, as a Baumgardt-Moreno-Hincks double play ended the inning. Gumpf led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but a double play forced him out, and a flyout ended the inning.

Miami went three up, three down in the seventh. After a leadoff strikeout, Glancy drew a walk and Hincks singled, with Glancy reaching third on a Baumgardt flyout. Hincks stole second, but another flyout ended the inning still with the 4-2 lead.

Reeth and the Irish made quick work of Miami in the eighth, allowing a single but nothing more. In the bottom of the eighth, Flores drew a leadoff walk, and DM Jefferson entered at DH, also drawing a walk. Pinch hitter INF Casey Kmet sent a fielder’s choice to place runners on first and second, and Moreno doubled, his second of the game, to score Jefferson. A flyout ended the inning with a 5-2 Notre Dame lead.

Reeth and Notre Dame’s defense sat Miami down in order in the ninth, his fourth scoreless inning, to secure the win and series victory.

UP NEXT

Notre Dame will look to earn a third in Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET matchup. RHP Rory Fox will start on the mound for the Irish, facing Miami LHP Herick Hernandez. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX.

Rare company

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team is set to begin an NCAA Tournament run thanks in part to a phenomenal season from the freshman guard — who just got named as a 1st Team AP All-American.

From the Notre Dame press release:

Hannah Hidalgo continues to etch her name amongst the greats of women’s college basketball.

On Wednesday, Hidalgo was named to the Associated Press All-America First Team along with Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, USC’s JuJu Watkins, Stanford’s Cameron Brink and UConn’s Paige Bueckers. Hidalgo and Watkins are just the fourth and fifth freshmen to ever earn the honor since it began in 1994-54, joining Bueckers, UConn’s Maya Moore and Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris.

Hidalgo is the first Irish player to earn First Team All-America honors since Jewell Loyd did so in 2015. Hidalgo, Loyd, Kayla McBride, Skylar Diggins and Ruth Riley are the sole Notre Dame players to ever be included on one of the nation’s most prestigious lists.

The freshman out of New Jersey has already earned numerous postseason honors this year: ACC Rookie of the Year, ACC Defensive Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP. She has been named to All-America teams by The Athletic, Sporting News, ESPN and USBWA.

Hidalgo leads the nation with 4.6 steals per game and has already shattered the program single-season steals record previously held by Diggins. She is also averaging an ACC-leading 23.3 points and is dishing out 5.5 assists per game. The latter mark ranks third in the conference.

Hidalgo and Notre Dame (26-6) will be back in action on Saturday as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Irish will host No. 15 Kent State (21-10) and are 24-4 all-time in First Round games.

SB Nation Reacts

March Madness is about to reach its peak as we are all ready for the first rounds of both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Tournament. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish women earned the #2 seed and will face #15 Kent State.

According to college basketball fans that were polled, 69% are confident that the Irish will make it to the Sweet Sixteen over Kent State, Marquette, and the Ole Miss Rebels.

A little mid-week bounce back

While Notre Dame is having trouble against its ACC opponents this season, they have kept their winning record intact by chewing up on its out of conference foes. On Tuesday, the Irish continued its OOC winning ways with a 16-11 win over the Western Michigan Broncos.

From the ND press release via Claire Kramer:

Irish Bats Lead to 16-11 Victory Over Western Michigan

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame improved to 12-8 on the season with a 16-11 win over Western Michigan (9-10). OF T.J. Williams batted 1.000 on the day, going four-for-four with two RBI and two runs. He leads the team on the season with a .419 batting average. OF David Glancy was responsible for three RBI, while INF Estevan Moreno knocked three hits on the day, including a double.

RHP Radek Birkholz earned the win for Notre Dame, improving to 3-0 on the season. RHP Hagan Ward made his first-career start in Tuesday’s game.

The 27 combined runs scored by both teams rank tied for sixth-most in a single game at Frank Eck Stadium.

Notre Dame improves to 2-0 at home this season, and will host the first ACC home series of the season this coming weekend as Miami comes to town March 22-25.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Broncos got off to a hot start, as the leadoff batter drew a walk and reached second on a balk, advancing to third on a wild pitch. A double scored Western Michigan’s first run, and a subsequent single scored another. RHP Will Jacobsen took the mound for the Irish, and the Broncos homered to score two more. The Irish took care of the next two batters to head to the bottom of the inning down four.

Notre Dame responded, as Williams led off with a single and stole second, getting to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, INF Simon Baumgardt walked, and both advanced on a passed ball, Williams scoring Notre Dame’s first run. OF Tito Flores walked, and INF Jack Penney doubled to score Flores and Baumgardt, bringing the Irish within one. OF Brady Gumpf stepped to the plate and fired a ground-rule double to even the score, bringing Penney home.

In the second inning after two outs, two Broncos batters walked. RHP Rory Fox entered to pitch for the Irish. Western Michigan sent a three-run homer to right field to go up 7-4. Notre Dame placed a runner on second in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to convert.

In the top of the third, Western Michigan led off with a single, and a walk placed runners on first and second. Both runners took another base on a passed ball, and a sac fly scored one for the Broncos. A following single scored another, but a later strikeout from Fox ended the top half of the inning at 9-4 Broncos.

Baumgardt led off the third with a solo homer, putting the score at 9-5. Notre Dame added two singles in the third, but were unable to bring more runs home.

Western Michigan homered for the third time on the day to lead off the fourth and add a run. Two lineouts and a Fox strikeout ended the Bronco run. INF Estevan Moreno led off the fourth with a single, and Williams followed with another single. OF David Glancy hit into a fielder’s choice, pushing Moreno to third and tagging Williams out. An INF Connor Hincks sac fly scored Moreno to put the Irish back in the game down 10-6. After a Baumgardt walk, Flores singled to score both Baumgardt and Glancy, cutting away at the Bronco lead.

Heading to the top of the fifth with Western Michigan up 10-7, Birkholz entered to pitch for Notre Dame. After walking one, Birkholz struck out the next three batters for the Broncos’ first scoreless inning of the game. In the bottom of the inning, C Joey Spence led off with a single, and Moreno drew a HBP. Williams dropped a sac bunt to push both runners a base, and Glancy doubled to score Moreno and Spence, putting the Irish within one at 10-9.

Birkholz remained on the mound in the sixth, forcing a 5-4-3 double play from Baumgardt to Moreno to Hincks. A groundout ended the inning, the second-consecutive inning holding Western Michigan scoreless.

The Irish opened it up in the bottom of the sixth and batted through the order, as Flores led off with a single. Penney walked, and after a strikeout, Spence reached first and scored Penney and Flores on an errant throw, as the Irish took an 11-10 lead. Moreno then doubled to score Spence. Moreno stole third, and Williams singled, his third of the day, to score Moreno. Glancy delivered a fielder’s choice, but Williams got home, and the Irish went to the seventh up 14-10.

RHP Tobey McDonough entered to pitch for the Irish in the seventh, sitting the Broncos down in order and adding a strikeout. In the bottom of the seventh, two walks created traffic on the basepaths as Moreno singled to score OF Brady Gumpf. Williams hit his fourth single of the day to score Spence, and the Irish extended the lead to 16-10.

In the eighth, Western Michigan led off with a double, and a one-out single put two on base. RHP Nate Hardman took the mound for Notre Dame, and a sac fly scored another run for the Broncos. After a single, a flyout to Gumpf ended the inning. Notre Dame earned a walk in the eighth, but a double play sent the game to the ninth.

Hardman dealt two strikeouts to begin the ninth, and a groundout to Penney secured the 16-11 win.

What could go wrong?

You’re likely pretty aware that the new 12-team College Football Playoff format begins this year, and that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a chance to host a first-round game inside Notre Dame Stadium should they garner a #8 seed or better (but not better than #5 of course). ESPN has those playoff rights, so for the first time since 1990, a broadcaster other than NBC will be able to televise an Irish home game.

Further driving that home was ESPN’s announcement today of an extension of their media rights with the CFP through 2031-2032.

As just a quick thought... good. Personally, I’m fascinated by the thought of a full broadcast from someone other than NBC inside Notre Dame Stadium and how that will look and sound to fans and viewers at home.

ESPN and the College Football Playoff (CFP) have reached a pair of media agreements that ensures ESPN will continue as the exclusive, worldwide rightsholder to college football’s premier postseason event through the 2031-32 season. The exclusive home of the CFP since its inception in 2015, ESPN will expand its current package for the final two years (through the 2025-26 season), adding all four of the new First Round games each year to ESPN’s existing New Year’s Six (now Quarterfinals and Semifinals) and the CFP National Championship rights in the new 12-team playoff that will launch this Fall.

In addition, ESPN has secured a new, six-year agreement – beginning in the 2026-27 season – for the entire CFP, which includes exclusive rights to all rounds of the expanded playoff – first round, quarterfinal, semifinal and National Championship, as well as continued exclusive rights to all ancillary programming connected to the playoff, such as the CFP Selection Show, weekly Top 25 Rankings Shows and more.

In both the amended two-year agreement and new six-year extension, the CFP provides ESPN with the right to sublicense a select number of games.

“ESPN has worked very closely with the College Football Playoff over the past decade to build one of the most prominent events in American sports. We look forward to enhancing our valued relationship over the next two years, and then continuing it for six more as we embark on this new, expanded playoff era,” said ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. “This agreement further solidifies ESPN as the home of college football, as well as the destination for the vast majority of major college championships for the next eight years.”

“We are delighted to continue our long-standing relationship with ESPN,” said CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock. “It’s a significant day for the CFP and for the future of college football. The depth of coverage that ESPN gives to the sport throughout the season is second to none. There is no better platform to showcase this iconic championship as we move into the new 12-team format because ESPN’s people love college football every bit as much as we all do.”

Beginning in the 2026-27 season, ESPN will broadcast the CFP National Championship on ABC in addition to offering its signature MegaCast presentation across ESPN platforms. In all, the new agreement includes expansive rights to simulcast or MegaCast CFP games across all Walt Disney Company platforms, including TWDC Direct-to-Consumer offerings.

The new, six-year agreement also provides expanded sales and sponsorship opportunities that will cement Disney Advertising as the exclusive seller of the College Football Playoff Official Partner Program and broaden Disney Advertising’s ability to connect more brands to the fandom and reach of the College Football Playoff.

“This new agreement solidifies the broadcast future of the College Football Playoff for many years to come,” said Chairman of the CFP Board of Managers and Mississippi State University President Dr. Mark Keenum. “ESPN has been a key piece of the overwhelming success of the playoff during these first ten years. The addition of ABC to this expanded relationship is just the next step in the continued growth of one of the top sporting events of the year.”

The CFP has contributed to the most-watched days in ESPN’s nearly 45-year history, led by the first CFP Semifinals in 2015 boosting ESPN to 11.6 million average viewers for New Year’s Day. The CFP Semifinals in 2018, 2022 and 2024 anchored ESPN in rounding out the top four complete day audiences in network history. College football on ESPN accounts for the top 15 and more than 50 of the top 100 most-watched cable programs on record (since 1987), with 8 of the top 10 directly from CFP Semifinals or National Championship games.

In 2023-24, ESPN’s expansive coverage of the CFP delivered a record year. The three-game CFP scored its most-watched matchups in six years (since Year 4) and third best of the CFP era with 23.6 million viewers and 15 percent year-over-year audience growth across the trio of games. The CFP National Championship and New Year’s Six averaged 15.1 million viewers, the best audience in five years and fifth highest in the 10-year history of the CFP, up double digits year-over-year.

The agreement with the CFP marks ESPN’s second significant college sports media rights extension in 2024, following the eight-year deal with the NCAA announced in January, which encompasses exclusive rights to 40 NCAA Championship events.
You might know the name

On Monday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got its first commitment for the 2026 class when wide receiver Dylan Faison gave his verbal pledge. Dylan Faison, the brother of Irish star Jordan Faison, is also one of the nation’s top lacrosse players and is expected to play both while at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame had just offered Dylan the day before during its “Pot of Gold” campaign, and the 5’11” 170 pound WR from St. Andrews School in Boca Raton, Florida, wasted no time in securing a place at his dream school.

There’s still almost a year and a half until signing day for the 2026 class, but I think it’s fairly safe to say Faison will definitely be a part of this class.

It’s impossible to watch him and not see the exact traits that stood out with his older brother as a freshman. Toughness, lateral agility, and speed can go a long way at receiver and Dylan Faison checks those boxes. He has a longer frame than his brother as well.

Dylan is currently unranked as a recruit, but that’s not all that uncommon given how early in the cycle it is for the 2026 class. When he does get his first ranking, it will likely be as a 3-Star. What happens after that will remain to be seen.
