Notre Dame Hockey Loses Close Game to Wisconsin

The Irish fought after going down but couldn’t make their way back

X @NDHockey

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team and the Wisconsin Badgers opened their series Friday with a close fought game. Ryan Bischel kept things tied early before Wisconsin scored first in the second. Notre Dame tied it late but a third period goal from the Badgers was too much to overcome.

Game Summary: Notre Dame 1 - Wisconsin 2

First Period

There was no score through the first period but plenty of action from both teams. Shots were tight, with Wisconsin leading 11-10 and some big saves from Ryan Bischel kept the game scoreless. Each team had a power play chance that they couldn’t convert and 20 minutes went by without a goal.

Second Period

Halfway through the second period Wisconsin finally broke the deadlock, scoring to take the 1-0 lead. It was a struggle offensively for Notre Dame but late in the second period they managed to tie the game at 1 while shorthanded. Justin Janicke crossed into the offensive zone and laid the puck to Paul Fischer, who carried toward the net before dropping it back again to Janicke. Janicke took a shot that was saved but rebounded directly to Hunter Strand next to a wide empty goal who put it in for the tying goal.

Third Period

The third period followed much of the same script as the first period, until Wisconsin broke the deadlock 8 minutes into the period. Two minutes after the Wisconsin goal Notre Dame got a 5 minute power play but couldn’t convert for a goal. A late flurry at the end also came for the Irish but they couldn’t find the tying goal and the game finished 2-1 Badgers.
