The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team is on the road this weekend for the first time in the second half of the season. The two games against the Ohio State Buckeyes began Friday with a close game and an Irish comeback attempt that fell just short late in the game.

Game Summary: Notre Dame 2 - Ohio State 3

First Period

Notre Dame was facing an uphill battle almost immediately in this game, taking three penalties in the first period. Ohio State was able to pin the Irish in their own zone but couldn’t get a goal while up a man. Their offensive advantage continued though and eventually the Buckeyes broke through for the first goal of the game 16 minutes in.

Second Period

The second period was a more evenly matched affair, with shots almost even and the only penalty taken by Ohio State. The Buckeyes once again scored the only goal of the period though and they took a 2-0 lead into the final 20 minutes.

Third Period

In the third period Notre Dame’s offense finally showed up, scoring just over a minute into the period to cut the deficit to one. A puck battle behind the Buckeyes net saw several players try and fail to take control. Eventually Landon Slaggert was able to get the puck in front of the net where Drew Bavaro jumped on it and fired a wrist shot into the back of the net.

A the halfway point of the period Notre Dame was able to tie the game at two, and this time it was gold medal winner Danny Nelson who picked up the goal. Nelson carried the puck all the way from the Irish blue line into the offensive zone. He drove the net and was able shield the puck from a defender before switching to his forehand and putting the puck past goalie Logan Terness.

Just two minutes later Ohio State took the lead again though, this time their power play did make it work. Notre Dame pushed for the equalizer late and held a six on four advantage for the final few seconds but they were unable to find the tying goal for the second time and the Buckeyes held on for the 3-2 win.
