Yared Nuguse '21 sets new American record in the mile

While the football team rarely plays Michigan anymore, it's good to see Domers doing the Lord's work in other sports.

ICYMI, Peacock aired the Pre Classic this weekend from Eugene, OR. Former ND track/cross-country star Yared Nuguse ran just behind the best in the world, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who missed the world record by only 0.6 seconds. By finishing second, though, Yared ran the fourth-fastest time in history and shattered the 16-year-old American record by 3 seconds; and what's more, that record was held by Michigan Wolverine Alan Webb.

For those who don't follow track (i.e., most of America), Nuguse has been tearing it up this year, dropping I think 4 other American Indoor or Outdoor records. He placed fifth in the 1500m world championships last month, and has been consistently the top American. Part of his secret is his attitude: a biochemistry major (cum laude) at Notre Dame, he plans to go to dental school and become an orthodontist after a few more years of enjoying himself being a world-class professional distance runner.

He and Molly Seidel are doing the Irish proud on the world stage. Seidel took the bronze in the marathon at the last Olympics. She's been battling injuries since, but is a delightful social media follow, and another just spectacular representative of our lady's university. GO IRISH!
