TRANSFER PORTAL: FIU wide receiver Kris Mitchell commits to Notre Dame

Adding a big-time playmaker at wideout to help make up for last week’s transfer portal losses

NCAA Football: Florida International at Connecticut David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Less than 24 hours after landing a commitment from Arizona State Sun Devils defensive back Jordan Clark in the transfer portal, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team has reeled in another big-time transfer commitment at a position of dire need — Florida International Panthers grad transfer wide receiver Kris Mitchell.

The Irish lost a number of wide receivers to the transfer portal last week with the firing of WR coach Chansi Stuckey and several players just looking for a new start, as Chris Tyree, Tobias Merriweather, Braylon James, and Rico Flores all announced their plans to play elsewhere next season.

Thus, it’s of utmost important that Marcus Freeman, Gerad Parker, and newly-hired WR coach Mike Brown restock the WR depth chart with proven veteran talent — especially with outside receivers, considering Jordan Faison and Jaden Greathouse look quite capable of managing the slot receiver spot next season. This is a huge start in that effort, as Mitchell is considered one of the better outside wideouts available.

A 6’1”, 175-lb junior from Jacksonville, Mitchell put up a fantastic 2023 stat line of 64 catches, 1,118 yards, and 7 touchdowns, displaying fantastic speed and playmaking ability, as well as the ability to handle #1 WR volume in targets/receptions.

Mitchell visited Notre Dame this past weekend, loving his trip and leading to his commitment just a couple days later.

He immediately becomes one of the most talented — and certainly one of the most proven — of the receivers on the roster, with a propensity for making some pretty impressive plays.

The Irish aren’t done yet, both overall with the transfer portal and especially with wide receivers. Washington State grad transfer WR Josh Kelly — who led the Cougars in receiving in 2023 with 61 receptions for 923 yards and 8 scores — is currently visiting Notre Dame, and Clemson transfer WR Beaux Collins plans to visit ND later this week (coinciding with Duke QB Riley Leonard’s visit).

The Notre Dame staff will certainly target transfers at a few other key positions of need as well, so stay tuned for more additions as the next couple weeks progress, and welcome Kris to the Irish family!

While we will keep updating the scholarship chart throughout transfer portal season and signing day season — it’s merely a guideline. Do not get overwhelmed with the overall numbers, and instead, focus on the position groups and the numbers there.
