Notre Dame Hockey Opens Second Half with 5-1 Win Over Augustana

The Irish offense was powered by a Cole Knuble hat trick

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team opened the second half of their season on Saturday night at home against the Augustana Vikings. The offense powered the win, led by a hat trick from freshman Cole Knuble.

Game Summary: Notre Dame 5 - Augustana 1

First Period

Notre Dame dominated the opening 20 minutes, much like most of the game, but the results weren’t completely there at the beginning. The Irish opened the scoring 4 minutes into the game. A loose puck was picked up by Trevor Janicke right in front of goal that just trickled across the goal line for the 1-0 lead. That was the only goal of the opening period though despite Notre Dame putting 15 shots on goal. It could have easily been more, but the Irish wouldn’t regret the missed opportunities.

Second Period

At the end of the game Notre Dame didn’t regret the missed opportunities in the first period, but they almost did when Augustana tied the game only one minute into the second period. The Irish answered later in the period with the first goal from Cole Knuble. The puck was passed around a bit in the offensive zone before making it’s way to Knuble at the left faceoff circle where he ripped one passed the goalie to regain the Irish lead. That lead held 2-1 after two periods.

Third Period

In the third period, Notre Dame finally took advantage of opportunities and put the game out of reach. Halfway through the period Brennan Ali created a turnover in the offensive zone that led to a 2-on-1 with Patrick Moynihan dishing to Cole Knuble for his second goal of the game.

Less than two minutes later Trevor Janicke extended the Irish lead with his second of the game and then Knuble wrapped the game up with three minutes left with his third goal of the game. It was Knuble’s first multi goal game and, of course, his first career hat trick.
