The Notre Dame Fighting Irish finished their series against the Michigan State Spartans Saturday with a 2-1 loss as Michigan State set the tone early on. This followed Friday’s series opener in which the Irish fell 5-2 to the Spartans.
Game Summary (Michigan State 2, Notre Dame 1)
The Spartans got off to a blazing fast start and fired off four shots in the first two minutes alone. Michigan State scoring opportunities came early on in shots from Tiernan Shoudey and Red Savage as the Spartans brought the aggression. Michigan State’s Karsen Dorwart snagged the first goal of the night about seven minutes into the first. A slashing penalty on Notre Dame’s Trevor Janicke followed right after the opening goal. The shorthanded Irish came close to tying the game with a shot from Justin Janicke, but Michigan State netminder Trey Augustine made the save. A game misconduct for cross-checking for Notre Dame’s Paul Fischer continued the Spartans’ advantage and an interference call on Michigan State’s Tiernan Shoudy later gave the Irish the upper hand, but the 1-0 score remained heading into the second. By the end of the first, the Spartans outshot the Irish 16-13.
Following an early slashing penalty on Notre Dame’s Drew Bavaro, Michigan State’s Red Savage found the back of the net on the power play to double the Spartans’ score. Two penalties for Michigan State followed, but the Irish failed to capitalize on the power play. This time, the Spartans nearly tripled Notre Dame’s 7 shots with 18 of their own.
After some back and forth, each team notched a penalty, and an Irish scoring opportunity came in a shot from Landon Slaggert which Augustine quickly denied.
Patrick Moynihan got the Irish on the board in the final seconds, but it was not enough for Notre Dame and the Spartans ended the night with the 2-1 win.
