It’s transfer portal season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the rest of college football. There will be many, many names that enter the portal, and the Irish won’t be immune to a large handful of players seeking a chance to play elsewhere. On Friday, Notre Dame freshman wide receiver Rico Flores announced his decision to leave the Irish football program after one year, and will enter his name into the transfer portal.
The Notre Dame wide receiver room is now officially decimated for the bowl game, and will need a massive infusion of talent by the spring to compete in the 2024 season.
Flores was one of the feel good stories for the Irish in 2023, and his production as a freshman gave us hope that things were on the right track. He caught 27 passes this year for 392 yards and a touchdown (a crucial touchdown against the Ohio State Buckeyes). More than just his stat line, we saw his development progress throughout the season as he virtually became WR1 for Sam Hartman at the end of the year.
Good luck to Flores wherever he may go.
