Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 4-Star quarterback Kenny Minchey commits to the Irish

The Irish got their QB

On Tuesday, 4-Star quarterback Kenny Minchey announced his commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The Pope John Paul II High School star got an offer from Notre Dame this summer, but things with the Pittsburgh Panthers were already well underway for Minchey, and he committed to Narduzzi and Pitt. Things went sideways last week with a surprise visit to South Bend for Minchey — as well as a decommitment from Minchey’s pledge to Pitt.

The visit obviously went well, and now the Irish finally have their quarterback for the 2023 class.

Per 247’s Cooper Petagna:

Verified at 6-foot-1 ½ and 207-pounds in June of 2022. Possesses a sturdy frame with wide shoulders and a strong lower half. Possesses growth potential to add necessary weight to his frame. Although his height would be categorized as undersized for the position, his 10-inch hands are in the 70% percentile of NFL starters.

Displays good athleticism and mobility to extend plays in and outside the pocket. Quick twitch athlete with natural avoid and escape ability. Flashes excellent pocket instincts and awareness while keeping his eyes down the field. Appears to possess a good play temperament, rarely playing rushed amidst pressure.

Possesses a quick release and strong arm capable of making every throw on the field. Exhibits natural instincts and excels on the move outside the pocket as a passer. Demonstrates the ability to consistently play with touch and anticipation, while showing the ability to throw his receivers open. An instinctive passer that has a knack for understanding how to extend plays within the pocket with his subtle athleticism and ability to keep his eyes down field as plays develop.

Although sample size as a senior was limited due to injury, he improved his completion percentage from 61% as a junior to 73% as a senior in four games. A savvy pocket passer with excellent game management skills, Minchey projects to a high level multi-year starter at the Power Five level. Has a good understanding of the position and processes the game quickly. Would not be surprised if he makes an impact sooner than later at the next level.

ON3’s Evaluation:

Polished, consistent passer with feel for the game. Has a compact build at 6-foot-1, 201 pounds with a 10-inch hand. Tests as a good athlete for the position, running a 4.78 second 40-yard dash, a 4.32 second shuttle and jumping 37 inches in the vertical prior to his senior season. Completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 3,280 yards and 32 touchdowns against 9 picks as a junior. A steady, consistent passer on both Friday nights and in the camp setting. Able to replicate throws from different platforms and in the face of pressure. Negotiates space in the pocket well and shows a good feel for the pass rush. Arm strength looks to be better in the camp setting than at times on Friday nights. Can continue making more plays with his legs. Longer back stroke within his throwing motion that can show up in game settings. Will not wow you with his physical tools relative to other blue-chip quarterbacks, but presents a well-rounded skill set, particularly as a passer.

It was a long road for the Irish in securing Minchey’s recruitment. There was the Dante Moore saga and how that affected prospects like Chris Vizzina and Jackson Arnold, and then there was also the possibility that 2024 QB commit C.J. Carr was going to reclassify for the 2023 class — which he did not.

While the process has shown that Minchey was not the first choice — this is a damn good quarterback that can help the Irish win a lot of games in the future.

Minchey is the 24th commitment for Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class which is currently ranked #3 in the country — just right behind the Georgia Bulldogs at #2 and the Alabama Crimson Tide at #1.

At present, Notre Dame’s class is well-represented and balanced. It’s still going to be a wild ride to national signing day, but for now there is a LOT of good here, and the future with Marcus freeman at the helm looks very bright.

I think Minchey is a fantastic pick-up for Notre Dame, but people should still be on the lookout for a transfer portal move from Notre Dame to help man the position in 2023 (and maybe 2024).

There are a lot of things you should like about Minchey, but I like to continue to point out that ESPN has him rated the highest — just like they did with fellow a Pope John Paul II Notre Dame man... Golden Tate.

FIST PUMPS UP FOR MINCHEY!
