Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 4-Star Running Back Sedrick Irvin Jr. Commits to the Irish

The other side of the Megaphone

On Wednesday morning, 2023 4-Star running back Sedrick Irvin Jr. from Miami, Florida, verbally committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a ceremony at his high school, Gulliver Prep.

Irvin chose the Irish over a large handful of elite offers such as the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, and others. He also chose the Irish over his father’s alma mater, the Michigan State Spartans. He is widely considered to be a Top 5 running back across the nation.

The 5’11, 190 pounder is a very versatile type of running back that can hurt opponents in the passing game as well as on the ground — just the way the Irish like their running backs.

An evaluation from 247’s Andrew Ivins:

The type of running back that can do a little bit of everything. Has spent the past three years making a difference at one of the top private schools in the Miami metro. A patient runner with superb vision that doesn’t try to do too much. Quick out of the chute and more than capable of beating a defender to the edge. Soft hands make him more than just the occasional check-down option as he can generate big gains when he gets the ball on both screen and swing passes. Shouldn’t be viewed as much of a power back at this stage in his development, but is already pushing 190 pounds and has shown on Fridays that he can pick up yards after contact. Posted above-average testing numbers the spring before his junior season. Lateral quickness shows up on tape with his swift cuts. Could probably improve top-end speed a bit, but not exactly slow. Has experience working out of a variety of different formations, which is certainly valuable. Will likely need a few years to adjust to the college game, but has the skillset to emerge as a contributor at the Power 5 level. Might carve out a role early on in his career as a third-down back of sorts given ability to impact the passing game.

This is Notre Dame’s fifth commitment in the 2023 class, which is now currently ranked #3 overall at the moment. While recruiting Florida talent is not surprising, it is nice to see that this class already has two of the best from the Sunshine State after a handful of years of light recruiting by the Irish in the state.

The Irish have been doing quite well at running back, and looking ahead at the roster in 2023 gives a dynamic glimpse of the future. Notre Dame could still add a back in the 2022 class — although it may not be necessary at this point. If they don’t add another in 2022, we should expect the 2023 class to have two backs.
