Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Elite 4-Star California wide receiver C.J. Williams commits to the Irish

He sure ain’t going to Wisconsin

C.J. Williams

Del Alexander can bang on his chest even harder. On Sunday, 4-Star wide receiver C.J. Williams gave his commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and their 2022 recruiting class. He is the second high 4-Star wide receiver to commit to the Irish in the last seven days, so any slander about Del Alexander and Tommy Rees should be killed with fire.

Williams is the #11 WR in the country according to the 247 Composite rankings, and chose the Irish over an extensive list of programs such as the Alabama Crimson Tide, USC Trojans, Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, Michigan Wolverines — and many, many others.

An evaluation from 257’s Brandon Huffman:

Smooth pass catcher who can line up at any of the receiver positions. Very athletic frame with plenty of room to add good weight and strength. Gets off the line well and shows the short area quickness to separate. Not a burner but runs well enough to be a deep threat and get behind a defense and can also make a play after the catch. Advanced route runner who is smart and understands how to set up a corner, when to settle in to a zone and doesn’t run himself out of being open. Natural pass catcher with good jump ball skills. Does a nice job winning 50-50 balls but can continue to improve strength and catching the ball through contact. Shows a nice upside and projects as a impact upper tier Power 5 starter and potential high round NFL draft pick.

Williams is now the 21st commitment in Notre Dame’s 2022 recruiting class. The class represents 16 different states, and is now ranked #2 according to the 247 Composite Team Rankings. It’s a formidable 21 with a Blue-Chip ratio of 71% — which could be 76% once Amorion Walker gets that 4-Star bump we all expect.

In most years under Del, we would expect this to be the last WR commitment for the 2022 class — but that’s probably not the case this time around. Notre Dame will probably sign 27+ recruits in this class, and I would expect at least one more WR. Could there be a spot open for a fifth guy? Maybe — but one of the five would have to be a guy that would be willing to change positions if needed. Walker is a player that some schools see as a defensive back, but Notre Dame is recruiting him only as a receiver.

This is a huge win for the Irish from one of the best football schools in California. It’s what should be expected, and Del Alexander absolutely delivered.
