Notre Dame Football Recruiting: New Jersey defensive back Jayden Bellamy commits to the Irish

On Friday, 3-Star cornerback Jayden Bellamy committed to the 2022 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football recruiting class. The 5’11” 175 pounder from Bergen Cathilic High School in New Jersey, chose the Irish over an impressive offer list that includes the Clemson Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners, and more. Bellamy is the high school teammate of now fellow 2022 commit, quarterback Steve Angeli.

While Bellamy is listed as a cornerback, I believe he is being recruited more as a “defensive back,” — meaning that the staff will have some options when he arrives at Notre Dame.

Bellamy has really good speed, and looks naturally athletic. ISD’s Mike Frank has said that Bellamy is more of a “football player” than pure cornerback right now and credited his physical play and clear love of the game. I agree with that assessment, but I would also add that his instincts add to that whole “football player” grade.

Jayden is the 17th commitment of the 2022 recruiting class (and the second (Jaden/Jayden defensive back).

Again, there is a real discussion to be had about what Jayden’s future will be in the Irish defensive backfield. The nickel position could be what will get him his first bit of playing time. For now we will continue to list him as a cornerback on the scholarship chart.

While there are some thoughts out there that the Irish won’t go past 25 commitments in this class, I still believe the Irish can (and likely will) take 27 or more (which means 10 or more commitments). 7 spots alone could be dedicated to 3 more wide receivers, and at least 2 more offensive linemen, and at least 2 more defensive backs. The Irish are still in the race for a large number of prospects though by mid-August, at least, we should see enough commitments to see which direction the Irish head towards as the first signing day in December approaches.
