Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Defensive End Darren Agu decommits from the Irish

New, 11 comments

Bigger loss than it looks

On Sunday, 3-Star defensive end Darren Agu announced that he was decommitting from the 2022 Notre Dame Fighting Irish recruiting class.

We wrote this about Agu back when he originally committed in April:

The 6’6” 225 pounder from Raybun Gap, Georgia, chose the Irish over offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Penn State Nittany Lions, and many more — it’s a fantastically strong list of schools.

While only a 3-Star right now, many recruiting insiders are expecting a huge jump in the rankings at some point. Agu hasn’t played football very long at all, and is still a little raw — but he is also extremely athletic. He originally hails from England via Ireland, and their football ain’t this football.

“It’s a massive catch for Notre Dame. He’s not a five-star now, because he hasn’t played enough. But this could be a big superstar for Notre Dame.”

— Recruiting analyst Tom Lemming on ND verbal commitment Darren Agu

Certainly this is a big blow to the 2022 recruiting effort for the Irish. Yes, on the surface Agu is “just a 3-star” and currently one of the lower rated players in the class — but we still expect a big jump in the rankings.

According to Irish Illustrated’s Tom Loy, Notre Dame’s future depth chart seemed to be a big factor in Agu’s decision.

“Moving ahead, the schools we’re told to watch include Northwestern or Vanderbilt, in addition to others that could come into the mix in the future. We’re told Agu is looking for a depth chart that will afford him the chance to play early in college, something that likely wasn’t going to happen at Notre Dame.”

Besides Notre Dame’s current projected depth chart for 2022 (with Tyson Ford and Aiden Gobaira already in the class), the Irish have already received commitments from 5-Star DE Brenan Vernon and 4-Star DE Keon Keeley in the 2023 class. The Irish are also still very much in the mix with 4-Star DE Cyrus Moss in the 2022 cycle.

Notre Dame’s current recruiting class is ranked #3 by the 247 Composite Team Rankings, and could still see a big boost over the course of the next week with a couple of commitments.
