The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a roster full of players, and we want to talk about them all. One Foot Down’s player profile series will, once again, take a look at every single one of them, and hopefully we all learn a little bit more about these guys, and Notre Dame’s chances for the upcoming 2021 season.
#70 Hunter Spears, OG
Hunter Spears is a 6’4, 300 lb rising Junior from Texas, who has all years of eligibility remaining thanks to Covid. He entered college as a 4 star defensive lineman, though he tore his ACL in both his Junior and Senior Seasons. He enrolled early in 2019 and was actually able to get some limited playing time and was credited with 2 tackles on the year. He was moved to guard the following Spring and looked to develop, but after 1 practice Covid had other plans. He didn’t see the field in 2020 and things don’t look great on the injury front, as he did not practice all of Spring. There have been some reports about if he can still play, but until anything is official, Spears still has 4 years to get healthy and develop.

Not sure how Texans feel about Texas Roadhouse.....but my guess it’s sort of similar how Australians feel about Outback Steakhouse. With that said, I am ABSOLUTELY a sucker for fast casual restaurants like this. Huge fans of this, Longhorn, Ruby Tuesday, and of course....Outback. Spears seems like a kid who could house some steaks here, and I mean that in an endearing way.
2021 Outlook
Without any sort of showing in Spring and a pretty loaded guard room at the moment, it isn’t likely we will see much of Spears this fall. His health is by far the biggest concern before he starts thinking about depth charts. Hopefully he can use this season to get fully healthy and head into the Spring season with some renewed vigor. Spears is a very talented athlete who can help the Irish, but has to be healthy to do so. Everyone hopes this is not a situation where a medical hardship waiver happens...but I will be looking out for Spears early in the fall camp videos!
