Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 4-Star tight end Holden Staes commits to the Irish

Ain’t he a peach?!

On Friday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to finish its tight end recruiting for the 2022 cycle when 4-Star TE Holden Staes announced his commitment. The 6’5” 230 pounder from Atlanta, Georgia, was the top tight end on Notre Dame’s board.

Staes chose Notre Dame over a very long list of schools that included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, Ohio State Buckeyes, and LSU Tigers (it also include the Michigan Wolverines).

From what I’ve seen, Staes didn’t play a lot of in-line tight end in high school. He played detached and in the slot in the passing game. So, if you instantly want to call him a taller version of Tommy Tremble (it’s a Georgia thing), that would mostly be inaccurate. He does appear to be a physical pass receiver, and shows that physicality on defense as well.

Staes is the 13th commitment of the 2022 class — a class that is firmly in the #4 spot now according to the 247 Composite Team Rankings.

Notre Dame is done at tight end for the 2021 cycle — obviously. It was actually a strange turn of events as another Georgia tight end, Jack Nickel, was one of the first commitments in this class — until Notre Dame turned up the heat on both Eli Raridon and Holden Staes, and he decided to decommit this spring.

There is a lot of work still to do in the 2022 class, but with official visits starting back up next month and a lot of 4-Star guys in the mix, Notre Dame is in a great position to really have one of its strongest classes of the Brian Kelly era.
