On Monday former 5-Star wide receiver Jordan Johnson announced that he will leaving Notre Dame and entering the transfer portal.

This is clearly just another case of “it just wasn’t working out” for player and for Notre Dame.
As a true freshman, Johnson barely saw the field in 2020 as the Irish heavily leaned on seniors Javon McKinley, Ben Skowronek, and Avery Davis. There was never a role for him — especially as he was trying to get used to being a student at Notre Dame and all of what that takes in and out of the classroom.
A lot of us kind of felt this one coming, and while the easy thing to do is complain about Notre Dame NOT playing him, it’s probably more productive to debate about evaluations gone bad. Is Johnson going to rip it up somewhere else? Time will tell on that, but just this spring it appeared as if he was going nowhere, and you have to wonder why that might be.
Johnson held offers from all over the country, so his next destination could be just about anywhere. Good luck to him.
The Irish are now officially thin at wide receiver in terms of numbers. That could mean taking in a transfer or two over the next several months. With Johnson’s departure, Notre Dame now has exactly two wide receivers in the sophomore and junior classes — Xavier Watts and Jay Brunelle.
