When Clark Lea took over the head coaching job with the Vanderbilt Commodores, it’s safe to say that many of us have kept a close eye on what the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish defensive coordinator is up to in Nashville. So it’s strange that a particular hire of his to the staff at Vandy back in February has gone unnoticed — even if Vandy just released the info on Monday.
Former Notre Dame linebacker Greer Martini was hired by Vanderbilt as a quality control assistant for the defense. Martini played one year under Clark Lea’s tutelage in 2017 before he went on to play in the XFL (Salt Lake Stallions) with stops in the NFL before and after with the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.
Lea also hired former Notre Dame walk-on linebacker Jimmy Thompson as a defensive graduate assistant. Thompson was with Lea and the Irish for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
