Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 4-Star cornerback Jaden Mickey commits to the Irish

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish added a big piece to its 2022 recruiting class on Sunday when 4-Star cornerback Jaden Mickey announced his commitment to play ball in South Bend.

The Corona, California, native chose the Irish over a top 4 list that included the Northwestern Wildcats, Oregon Ducks, and California Golden Bears. He also held offers from the USC Trojans, Georgia Bulldogs, and others.

Mickey told Blue and Gold Illustrated’s Mike Singer:

“They play a lot of man. It’s about being aggressive and getting off a block to make a tackle. I feel like I can do that well. They play some zone, which I can do, too. I feel like I can fit in any defense, and this defense can really prepare me for the league.”

“I want Notre Dame fans to know that I’m going to work to be the best cornerback in the country. I want to be the first corner to be picked No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft.”

Jaden is the first defensive back commitment for the Irish in their 2022 class and is the 10th overall to choose Notre Dame. Notre Dame’s 2022 class is now ranked #4 in the country according to the 247 Composite Team Rankings — and we’re expecting more this week.

Mickey is now the 5th cornerback to be added to the Irish when you add him to the total from the 2021 class. While that may seem like enough on the surface, the fact that a handful of these guys are versatile enough to also play safety, means Notre Dame is getting more and more athletic in the secondary.

This is a HUGE get for the Irish, and it really adds more spice to the momentum that we have all felt with the addition of defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to the staff. Mickey has an aggressive nature to his play and is physical at the point of contact. He could definitely slide into a nickel role — or maybe even back at safety. He plans to enroll early, so we’ll see how his body and speed develop over the next year.

You guys can be excited about this one — no caveats needed.
