The Notre Dame Fighting Irish announced that they added a game against the Central Michigan Chippewas on September 16, 2023. This brings the number of scheduled opponents to 11 for the 2023 season. It is also the 6th named home game for the Irish, which means the 12th game scheduled could still be a Shamrock Series type of game.
Besides CMU in 2023, the Irish will welcome the Ohio State Buckeyes, USC Trojans, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Navy Midshipmen, and the Pittsburgh Panthers to South Bend. Notre Dame is scheduled to go on the road to face the Clemson Tigers, Stanford Cardinal, Duke Blue Devils, Louisville Cardinals, and N.C. State Wolfpack.
Here is the press release from Notre Dame Football Assistant Athletic Director for Football Communications Katy Lonergan:
Irish Announce 2023 Date with Central Michigan
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame and Central Michigan University football programs have scheduled a matchup between the two teams set to take place on Sept. 16, 2023, at Notre Dame Stadium.
The date will mark the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Notre Dame is 8-0 against teams from the Mid-American Conference (MAC), with the last game against a MAC team being the 52-0 win over Bowling Green on Oct. 5, 2019 (Notre Dame Stadium).
In the upcoming 2021 football season, the Irish are slated to face their ninth MAC game in the Sept. 11 home opener, hosting Toledo — also the first meeting between the two teams.
After taking on Toledo and Central Michigan, Notre Dame will have played 7-of-12 current MAC member institutions.
Of course, CMU is where Brian Kelly first started coaching at the FBS level — so this evens the score with the Cincinnati Bearcats.
The Fighting Irish will be hosting Central Michigan September 16th, 2023. ☘️
