Notre Dame Football Recruiting: The Irish finally offer Ohio quarterback Drew Allar

Making this a big deal because it is

On OFD we almost never report when new offers go out to recruits from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. To be perfectly honest... that’s not our job, or what we do here. That kind of coverage is masterfully done by our good friends over at Irish Illustrated, Blue and Gold, Irish Sports Daily, and Mr. Pokeman himself... Carter Karels with ND Insider.

But this is a little different.

On Thursday, Drew Allar announced via Twitter that Notre Dame offered.

Why is this a big deal? Notre Dame signed what we hope is a great one in Tyler Buchner in the 2021 cycle, but because Buchner is ONE person, there absolutely must be a great “next man up option” if he gets hurt, transfers for whatever reason, and for just good old fashioned competition. Getting a great quarterback in consecutive cycles may not seem like a need because of obvious playing time issues, but it can only help — not hurt — a team looking to improve its offense.

I like Allar a lot (and of course his Ohio blood means a great deal to me personally). He has that prototypical frame at 6’5” 220 pounds and has a really strong arm. He’s also a bit of a gunslinger in that he takes a few chances — and one of his highlights showed a nasty side arm pass to get around a defender that went for a TD.

He holds a pretty respectable offer list right now with the Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan Wolverines, Washington Huskies, Texas A&M Aggies, and others on that list... which now includes Notre Dame.

The Irish are NOT going to sign 5-Star Ty Simpson this cycle, but in Allar, they can still get a really fantastic quarterback to shore up the future — or BE the future.

Just though y’all should know. (You can check out this free article from Tom Loy for a bit more about Allar).
