The elite in-state prospects stays home

On Wednesday night, 5-Star linebacker Drayk Bowen gave his commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The 6’2” 215 pounder from Merrillville, Indiana, is the top player in the state for the 2023 class. Bowen chose the Irish over the Auburn Tigers and Clemson Tigers, but he also holds offers from all over the country — including the Michigan Wolverines, Wisconsin Badgers, LSU Tigers and more.

His evaluation from 247’s Allen Trieu:

Physically strong player who is a weight room warrior. Multi-sport athlete who excels on the baseball diamond also. Has great play speed. Pursues and closes to the football with effort and has explosivenes off the ball and as he closes to his target. Can play a couple of different roles as he has been used as a stand-up edge rusher or he can shift further outside and play out in space over a slot. Might not be as long as schools want in an edge-rusher so he projects more as a traditional outside backer who can blitz off the edge when needed. We have not seen him asked to drop back and cover as much so that is a part of his game that needs to be furthered evaluated although he looks like a good enough athlete to do that.

The Irish now have six commitments for the 2023 class, and two of them are considered 5-Star prospects. The class currently sits as the #3 class in the nation, and Notre Dame is the only program besides the Oklahoma Sooners with multiple 5-Star commitments.

Notre Dame and Marcus Freeman are really stacking the talent at linebacker. While Bowen is projected more as a WILL right now, he could certainly move to the MIKE in South Bend. A lot of that could weigh on where the four incoming freshmen for 2022 end up sorting out in Freeman’s scheme. Please notice that there are ZERO fullbacks listed, and I would personally love for Bowen to get a FB package like LB Leo Chenal has with the Wisconsin Badgers.

It’s always important to land the best talent from your home state, and when it’s a 5-Star player who is ranked #1 in the state... it’s even more important. Notre Dame has to gut it out all over the country for talent, and they do quite well in this regard, but a player of this caliber being right down the road is always a blessing.

Bowen also stated that he plans on playing baseball for the Irish as well.
