Following a shaky home ice performance last season and last week’s 4-3 exhibition loss to USNTDP, the Irish took on the Long Island University Sharks Saturday night and locked in a 5-2 win at Compton Family Ice Arena.
First Period
The Irish wasted no time setting the tone and chalked up a goal from Nick Leivermann just under one minute into the first period of play. As the period drew to a close, Landon Slaggert snagged another Irish goal with an assist from his brother, Graham. LIU’s Billy Jerry responded a little over half a minute later with a goal to end the period 2-1, Irish. The Irish ended the period with 8 shots and the Sharks finished it with 6.

Second Period
Notre Dame’s Cam Burke scored to get it going about five and a half minutes into the second and made it 3-1, Irish. It wasn’t until about 9 minutes into the second period that fans saw the Irish capitalize on the power play; Notre Dame’s Hunter Strand found the back of the net following LIU’s Carson Musser’s slashing penalty. Solag Bakich scored less than three minutes later to top off the period 5-1, Irish. The Irish offense upped the aggression in this period and outshot the Sharks 14-4 in the second.

Third Period
LIU’s Billy Jerry snatched a goal for his team, his second of the game, about five minutes into the final period.
While a tangle with less than two minutes into the third sent Notre Dame’s Leivermann off for cross-checking and Justin Janicke for a face masking game misconduct as well as LIU’s Isaiah Fox for a 10-minute major for boarding, the LIU power play was not enough to shift the Sharks’ momentum.
