Notre Dame Hockey: Irish Shut Out RIT Tigers in South Bend, 6-0

Bakich and Karashik came in clutch on the assists.

The Irish bounced back from Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers with a 6-0 shutout win on Saturday. Both teams have proven themselves on the penalty kill this season, but it was the Irish who found their flow in the final game of this series.

First Period

Trevor Janicke snagged his third goal of the season about six minutes into the first. A goal from Max Ellis and another from Janicke followed to triple the Irish score before 14 minutes of the period had passed. Solag Bakich assisted on all three goals of the period and by the end of the first, the Irish outshot the Tigers 13-5.

Second Period

After helping to set the tone for the Irish in the first, Bakich headed to the penalty box for roughing not even a minute into the second period. However, this time around, it was the Tigers who went after it on offense. The Tigers brought the sense of urgency on the power play, but it was not enough to shift the game.

A goal from Max Ellis about halfway through the period snapped what was left of the momentum shift and brought it to 4-0 Irish. After taking out some frustration, RIT’s Carter Wilke headed to the box for cross-checking and left it open for Landon Slaggert’s third goal of the season and the first Irish power play goal of the night. Notre Dame’s Ryder Rolston took a penalty for hooking as the period drew to an end, but the Tigers remained scoreless.

Third Period

By the end of the final period, Notre Dame tripled RIT’s five shots with 15 of their own. However, both teams failed to capitalize on their final power play opportunities of the game.

As the period neared its end, Notre Dame’s Hunter Strand topped off the score to bring it to 6-0, Irish. A scrap involving Notre Dame’s Landon Slaggert and RIT’s Cody Laskosky and Andrew Petrucci sent the three to the box, but the Irish had already locked in the shutout.
