Goodbye sweet fullback

Another tight end is leaving the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with some eligibility on the table. Tommy Tremble has announced that he will enter the 2021 NFL Draft.

Tremble will join another Irish TE in the 2021 NFL Draft in Brock Wright. Wright announced his decision last week.

There was a lot of hope that Tommy Tremble was going to have a breakout year for Notre Dame in 2020 as a pass-catcher. He’s a little shorter than most prototypical tight ends, but he has tremendous athleticism and is just tough as a Hills Brothers can of nails. But from that pass-catching standpoint... there just wasn’t that uptick in productivity that we have come to expect from Notre Dame tight ends.

Tremble played quite a bit in 2019, and after Cole Kmet left for the NFL, he naturally looked like the next option for Notre Dame. As 2020 moved forward however, it was freshman Michael Mayer that was used as the primary receiver from the tight end position.

Tremble was used primarily as a fullback or an H-back throughout the season — and a lot of us fell in love with how he played this position. His elite blocking skills made him a perfect fit for what Notre Dame was trying to do on offense — but you have to think that Tremble wanted more, and maybe that’s a big reason why it’s time for him to move on. Mayer is the rising star catching the ball as a tight end, and it’s hard to imagine Tremble being involved more in that aspect in 2021.

Good luck to Tommy in the draft, and he will always be one of my favorites as he truly brought the fullback back to South Bend.

Notre Dame brings back Mayer, George Takacs, and Kevin Bauman in 2021 and welcome the arrival of two freshmen in Cane Berrong and Mitchell Evans.
