Tis the season for Notre Dame Fighting Irish roster attrition. On Sunday night, sophomore cornerback Isaiah Rutherford announced that he will enter the transfer portal for next year.
Rutherford was part of the 2019 recruiting class, and was a 4-Star player coming out of California with a anational offer list that included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners, USC Trojans, LSU Tigers and many more.
After redshirting in 2019, Rutherford saw very little playing time in 2020 with transfer Nick McCloud on one side and freshman Clarence Lewis (and TaRiq Bracy) on the other side. The path to meaningful minutes in 2021 may not be there for Rutherford — although reasons for the move at this point would be speculative at best.
It’s hard to say how the corner position will shake out when we are still about two months away from spring football, but the Irish do have three cornerbacks on the way in their 2021 recruiting class with only Nick McCloud (maybe) departing the team with Rutherford.
