I’ve never been one to look too far ahead when it comes to Notre Dame Fighting Irish football recruiting — but times have changed drastically. We still have a little less than two weeks to go until national signing day for the 2021 class, but Notre Dame is all but done with that cycle. They signed 26 in December, and accepting the NLI from Logan Diggs on NSD is all that’s left (which we’re like 99% positive about that happening).
So it’s perfectly fine to reasonably study the next cycle with 2021 just about finished.
This post will turn into a series that we will publish on OFD monthly — but it may be done twice a month if there’s enough going on for the Irish. So let’s get going...
WHO’S IN?
Currently the Irish have 5 commitments and have the #6 class according to the Rivals Team Rankings.

The latest commitment was from 4-Star defensive end Tyson Ford. The class represents five different states with four of the five being “hand down” guys.
WHO’S ON THE TEAM?
It’s still extremely early to put much stock in a scholarship chart for 2022, but it at least provides a basic blueprint for positional need.

The most elementary of glances at this chart offers some glaring holes that need to be filled on the roster. Please keep in mind, however, the “extra” year of eligibility because of COVID-19. A handful of players that would be eligible for this extra year are not listed in the scholarship chart (yet). Guys like Shayne Simon, Paul Moala, Bo Bauer, Jayson Ademilola, Justin Ademilola, and others could technically return in 2022. Until we get some type of clarification on how the “85” rule is affected for 2022, they remain in limbo here.
And back to the needs...
- Wide Receiver
- Safety
- Defensive Tackle
Those three stand out right now, but the importance of other positions could shift over the course of the year.
OFFERS
Perhaps the biggest reason I sat down to write this post was because of the massive number of offers the Irish have out to recruits all over the country. Currently Notre Dame has 124 scholarship offers for the 2022 cycle. Usually, that number is hovering around 80 this early in the cycle. The entire 2021 cycle only had 156 offers — although the number has gone up and down over the years between around 130 and 200. I’m not sure if this early surge is solely related to the COVID-19 pandemic, or if it’s a strategic shift in recruiting philosophy.
The latter would be most welcomed.
Of course... the only offers that some fans care about are those with 5-Stars attached to the name. Some fans openly commented that Tyson Ford was “no big deal” because he was just a “4-Star DL.” While most of you (and myself) believe that kind of thinking is total nonsense, I will be tracking Notre Dame’s 5-Star offers a little more closely this cycle.
Currently the Irish have 14 offers out to 5-Star players that are uncommitted.
- Emmanuel Henderson RB Alabama
- Gavin Sawchuck RB Colorado
- Tetairoa McMillan WR California
- Kevin Coleman WR Missouri
- Zach Rice OT Virginia
- Gunner Givens OT Virginia
- Enal White WDE Pennsylvania
- Shemar Stewart SDE Florida
- Domani Jackson CB California
- Denver Harris CB Texas
- Will Johnson CB Michigan
- Jeadyn Lucas CB South Carolina
- Kamari Wilson S Florida
- Malaki Starks ATH Georgia
WHO’S NEXT?
I don’t really see any prospect committing soon — but that is more of a guess than anything else. If you said, “just pick one ans say his name,” then I suppose DT Donovan Hinish might be a safe bet.
More on legacies at another time.
