Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Irish get commitment from 4-Star defensive end, Tyson Ford

Huge get for the 2022 Irish class

The future along the defensive line for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got much brighter today. 4-Star defensive end, Tyson Ford, committed to Notre Dame during a live stream ceremony at Elite Football Academy. Ford chose the Irish over the Oklahoma Sooners and over a top group that included the Missouri Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs as well.

The 6’5” 250 pounder from St. Louis was considered an Oklahoma lock just about a week ago, but the determined recruiting of new Irish defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman and defensive line coach Mike Elston kept Notre Dame in it until they finally won over Ford completely.

Irish Sports Daily’s Jaime Uyeyama offers this evaluation:

Ford has a sky high ceiling. He’s long with explosive athletic traits. He’s a unique athlete at his size. What’s he going to be like when he gradually adds 20-30 pounds? Probably one scary dude coming off the edge. He has a very good first step and the kind of lateral quickness that will help him excel as a pass rusher. It’s not surprising that the 6’6” prospect doesn’t know how to use his length to his fullest advantage yet and can play a bit high with his pad level, but the potential is there for him to be one of the top defensive linemen in the 2022 cycle.

This is the fifth commitment for Notre Dame’s 2022 recruiting class — a class that now represents five different states. It also moves the Irish into the 5th ranked spot for the 247 Team Composite Rankings.

Notre Dame is still trying to finalize its 2021 team with its recruiting class and with, perhaps, more transfers. It’s hard to get a firm grip on the overall picture for the next class until all of that is sorted out, but clearly the Irish are doing well right now.

Schools will have to get back to the 85 limit in 2022 after getting a free year of eligibility from the NCAA because of COVID-19.We will take a look at how this will all shake out over the next several weeks. Until then — FIST PUMPS UP FOR TYSON!
