Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 4-Star wide receiver Deion Colzie commits to the Irish

On Monday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got the good news that we have been anticipating for several weeks now. 4-Star wide receiver Deion Colzie has committed to the Irish over the Georgia Bulldogs, Tennessee Volunteers, Florida Gators, and many others. He is the #14 WR and #84 player overall according to the 247 Composite Rankings.

Of course — we’ve been through this before. In October of last year, the 6’4 195 pound WR from Athens Academy in Georgia committed to Notre Dame. At the time, it was hailed as a tremendous win for the Irish and the 2021 class was off to an incredible start.

Unfortunately in March, Colzie decommitted from Notre Dame and stated that he may have rushed his decision, and wanted to slow the process down to make a better decision. Most thought that his decision would likely mean that he stayed in Athens to play for the Bulldogs — but Notre Dame continued to recruit Colzie and made sure to keep pushing on a door that Deion left open — even if it was just a crack.

As the summer months rolled on, Notre Dame made more and more headway with Deion thanks in part to the support of his mother (a big Notre Dame fan and in their corner the entire time). It finally gave way to the commitment today, an is just further proof that nothing is really over until signing day (which it is certainly not, so the Irish need to keep on Colzie).

247 Sports compared Colzie to Michael Floyd, and offered this evaluation:

Tall wideout with an angular build that has begun to fill out over his final years in high school. Is a top athlete who tests well in combine settings and is a state medalist high jumper. Carries that size and speed combination over to the field. Has turned in several impressive camp performances prior to his junior season. Plays for a private school in a small classification and is thus a mismatch against most opposing defensive backs. Able to separate downfield and shows the ability to track the ball over his shoulder. Has more build-up speed than initial quickness at this point. Will need to continue polishing his game against top competition when he gets the opportunity. Projects as a multi-year starter at the Power Five level with the upside of developing into an NFL Draft pick.

Deion is now the 18th commitment in the 2021 class for the Irish and the 2nd wide receiver with Lorenzo Styles being the other.

Normally we would discuss the scholarship count — especially this deep into the recruiting cycle. With the new NCAA exceptions because of the coronavirus, that conversation is a whole lot trickier and filled with much more nuance. I’ll try to shed some light on those possible numbers later this week — which actually might end with another WR commitment from the state of Georgia.
