Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 2022 Michigan safety Nolan Ziegler commits to the Irish

But we’re going to make him a linebacker

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish added another player to its 2022 recruiting class on Saturday when 3-Star safety Nolan Ziegler gave his pledge to Clark Lea. The 6’4” 205 pounder from Grand Rapids, Michigan chose the Irish over the in-state Michigan Wolverines along with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Virginia Tech Hokies and others from across the country.

There is no doubt that Ziegler’s family history with Notre Dame helped him with his decision. His grandfather played at Notre Dame and his grandmother was a cheerleader at for the Irish — and a member of the first female class to enroll in the school.

Ziegler projects more as a linebacker in college with a solid frame and really nice athleticism. His potential far outweighs what he is right now, and that’s always a good thing in recruiting.

Irish Sports Daily’s Jaime Uyeyama offers this:

I really like Ziegler’s potential as a Rover and then eventually moving inside. He has the kind of speed and length that projects really well and he’s an excellent tackler in space.

Some places have him rated as a safety, but he’s clearly a linebacker at the college level and already has experience playing in an off the ball role in the box showcasing it. I love his instincts and think he can become a high-level starter for the Irish if he develops like he should over the next few years.

This is the third commitment for Notre Dame’s 2022 class — a class that just got started less than a month ago. The Irish have really started to add quite a bit of heat to the 2022 cycle with a lot of new offers going out all over the country.

If Notre Dame’s linebacker group for 2021 stands firm (and by “class” I mean Prince Kollie all by himself) the 2022 recruiting class should see no less than 3 linebackers signed — and maybe a 4th.

All in all this is a really solid commitment for Notre Dame. Taking a safety from high school of this stature and developing him into a linebacker isn’t easy, but the payoff can be incredible because of the extra athleticism added to the position.

FIST PUMPS UP FOR NOLAN!
