On Sunday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish received a commitment from 3-Star defensive end/outside linebacker Will Schweitzer from Los Gatos, California. Schweitzer decommitted from the Nebraska Cornhuskers just hours before his announcement to jump on this late offer by the Irish.

Besides Nebraska, Will had a good list of offers from around the country including the Michigan State Spartans, Arkansas Razorbacks, Arizona State Sun Devils and more.

247’s Brandon Huffman offers this evaluation:

A bit of a tweener, doesn’t have the weight to be a defensive end, but has the pass rushing ability to stand up off the edge and get to the quarterback while also dropping into coverage to cover tight ends and backs. Can also play inside, physical at the point of attack and can strike the ball carrier. Moves well in space and covers a lot of ground. Active hands and can break up passes in coverage. Needs to continue to add weight and strength. Projects as a multi-year Power 5 starter and potential NFL draft pick.

Schweitzer is the 18th commitment of the 2021 Notre Dame recruiting class, and the 3rd defensive end — although both of those number may change soon. It’s more than rumor at this point — we expect 4-Star defensive end David Abiara to decommit (sometime). Will Schweitzer’s offer isn’t just a delayed evaluation, and it’s not exactly replacing Abiara either. Schweitzer is a tweener which makes him more of a weakside defensive end whereas Abiara is legitimately a strongside end.

Even with the recent adjustments to the Irish roster with medical hardships, I still firmly believe this 2021 recruiting class will max out at 20 maybe 21 recruits. Given what we think we know about Abiara, that means there are 3-4 open spots left (and few names that are possible).

With all of the uncertainty surrounding college football and states across the country cancelling the high school football season — there could still be a handful of surprises in store for Notre Dame and other programs.
