Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 3-Star offensive tackle Joe Alt commits to the Irish

Notre Dame adds an Iowa legacy to the 2021 class

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have had a tough time out on the recruiting trail for the 2021 class, but on Monday they received a verbal commitment from 3-Star offensive tackle Joe Alt to help the class out.

The 6’7” 257 pounder from Minneapolis, Minnesota chose the Irish over the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Missouri Tigers and others. Alt is the son of John Alt, the former Iowa Hawkeye and Kansas City Chiefs lineman.

247’s evaluation:

High school tight end who is very lean but has the frame, pedigree and skill set to grow into a college offensive tackle. Very good blocker from that spot in high school. Bends and can get leverage and plays with a good base. Balanced and keeps his feet. Moves well laterally. With the transition to offensive tackle, he would need more pass blocking reps. It is not out of the question a school would use him as a big tight end, but his upside is much higher as an offensive tackle prospect. He will have the add the weight and strength, but once he does that, he could be a high-end tackle.

Alt is the 12th commitment for Notre Dame’s 2021 class — a class with commitments from 11 different states. They are currently ranked #15 in the country according to the 247 Composite Team Rankings.

As it stands now, the Irish are right at that 85 man limit for the 2021 class — which doesn’t quite matter at all right now. We are still waiting on the official word for the attrition for the 2020 season, and one year is still a very long time when it comes to these things.

While many fans will trash ND for another 3-Star addition, I happen to love this particular commitment. NFL bloodlines can be a really good thing, and I love the concept of turning a big high school tight end into an offensive tackle. Obviously this is a guy that may not see real minutes until 2023, and that means 3 years of developing a body and a skillset.

We will talk much more about recruiting on the next OFD Podcast, as well as other stories on OFD this week. Until then...

FIST PUMPS UP FOR JOE!
