The Triple Option: Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly is still optimistic for a college football season

4 things you need to know about the Irish today

Brendan McAlinden

I was moments away from mowing my lawn for the first time in almost a month (basically to just cut down a few of the weeds that popped up through the dead grass) and then I caught myself thinking about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football season in 2020 (again). It’s a weird time to be alive for sure — but running one of these sites makes them even weirder. I know what I think, but what I think is probably less important than what’s actually happening.

It’s enough to start drinking pre-noon. I inevitably found myself back in the office, and realized a Triple Option is needed before mow time.

LET’S GO!

BRIAN KELLY HUNG OUT WITH DAN PATRICK

Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly went on the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday morning, and while nothing earth-shattering was revealed by Kelly — he did stay fairly upbeat and positive about the 2020 season.

“I’m optimistic we’re going to start. Then students get on campus and our guys move off-campus. Essentially, we leave the bubble and start the season, unlike some of the professional teams like the NHL or the NBA. They move into a bubble and start the season. College football leaves the bubble and starts the season. We’ll get to the starting line and we’ll see what happens after that.”

“Once we had the non-league games taken away from us, our calendar will probably be decided a lot by what the ACC schedule looks like. Sometime next week, we’ll have a better understanding of when we start.”

THE SHAMROCK HUNG OUT WITH CLARK LEA

If you haven’t listened to the latest Shamrock with Pete Sampson and Matt Fortuna — be sure to do that. No, Matt didn’t reveal his top ten date night restaurant locations for P.J. Fleck. The guys had Irish defensive coordinator Clark Lea on the show, and finding out what Clark Lea did as a 10 year old makes me think that I have wasted my entire life.

CARTER GRILLED BRIAN POLIAN

Are you even more curious about Notre Dame’s recruiting operation right now? ND Insider’s Carter Karels has a two-parter that should help answer some of your questions.

BRAWLING HIBERNIAN

Spencer Hall, Jason Kirk, and a few others have put together a college-football-western-sci-fi book that is available to purchase. Notre Dame makes quite the intro.

Both Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Drew White are on the watch list for the Nagurski Trophy.
