According to a Blue and Gold Illustrated report, Liberty Flames transfer cornerback Tayvion Land has been contacted by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Land was a 247 Composite 3-Star prospect in high school, although Rivals had him ranked as a 4-Star. Tayvion was once committed to the Maryland Terrapins before he flipped to Liberty.
Land a fellow cornerback Kei’Trel Clark put their names in the transfer portal shortly after racially insensitive remarks were given by Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University.

Given the nature of the transfer, I’d be shocked if Land and Clark don’t receive a waiver to have immediate eligibility. It makes the Notre Dame’s decision to reach out to Land all that more intriguing.
Here are a few thoughts about all of this:
- Land can play. As a freshman in 2019 he played in 9 games and had 23 tackles along with 1 FF.
- I think this says a lot about what Notre Dame may be facing on national signing day for the 2021 class. Even with guys like Ryan Barnes and Philip Riley in the mix, they want to “beef up” the defensive back depth charts.
- Notre Dame has spots open for 2020? Currently the Irish are sitting with 88 scholarships (3 over) and that’s without Mick Assaf and Colin Grunhard. We’re talking about a large amount of attrition in just 47 days.
We don’t know much else about the situation with Land and Notre Dame right now. Maybe Notre Dame is just checking him out, and maybe Land isn’t even interested. Regardless, I love how the staff seems to be right on top of this and is exploring it as an option.
I’ll drop the 2020 and 2021 eligibility charts here (I think they’re accurate) for you to check out. Neither accounts for the aforementioned Assaf or Grunhard.
