How the NFL schedule impacts the Notre Dame Football season

You know — if things are normal

One of the things that make the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program unique, is not only their willingness to play games inside NFL Stadiums, but the frequency of those games. In 2020 for example, Notre Dame plays 4 of its 6 games away from home inside NFL Stadiums. The sixth game of course, is the contest against the Navy Midshipmen in Ireland.

One of the things that come along with playing in NFL Stadiums is how the league schedules its own games. Obviously the games are on different days — but they can still affect what goes on for a Notre Dame game day. More specifically, it can impact what time the Irish will kickoff.

September 26 VS Wake Forest Demon Deacons @ Bank of America Stadium

The Carolina Panthers play the Los Angeles Rams in the LA Coliseum on the 27th, so there is no impact here. There are a handful of interesting games that day, but I suppose the Irish and Wake could play at any time.

October 3 VS Wisconsin Badgers @ Lambeau Field

The Green Bay Packers host the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football (10/5). Notre Dame is already schedule to play at 7:30 on Saturday night, so there is no impact here.

October 17 VS Pittsburgh Panthers @ Heinz Field

Heinz is the true home field for Pitt, so we have a better understanding of how this all works out. The Pittsburgh Steelers host the Cleveland Browns the following day at 1:00 — so that often times means that a NOON kickoff is very much a possibility. At the very least — this won’t be a night game.

November 14 VS Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets @ Mercedes-Benz Stadium

The Falcons are on a bye week, so there is no impact here — and probably wouldn’t be much anyways if they did play on Sunday because of the enclosed stadium.

November 28 VS USC Trojans @ Los Angeles Coliseum

The Los Angeles Rams host the San Francisco 49ers the next day for a 4:00 contest. Notre Dame hasn’t won a “day game” at Southern Cal since 2000, and the last two “day games” in 2014 and 2016 were disasters for the Irish. One of the few time I’m pulling for a prime time game, and the 4:00 NFL game should leave enough wiggle.

The Rams have a new Stadium.
