The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a roster full of players, and we want to talk about them all. One Foot Down’s player profile series will take a look at every single one of them, and hopefully we all learn a little bit more about these guys, and Notre Dame’s chances for the upcoming 2020 season.
#40 Drew White, LB
Drew White was someone on the team before the 2019 season that did not really have a chance to shine. He was coming off a redshirt year in 2018, only playing sporadically that season in a very successful season for the Irish. That 2018 team obviously had a very strong and veteran defense. But, in 2019, the Irish defense had to go through a bit of a refurbishing. There wasn’t much loss in terms of work ethic, but the skill level was undetermined.
In comes Drew White, a linebacker needed to fill a void left after the end of 2018. Drew was an absolute beast in the season. Right from the jump of the season against Louisville last season, Drew showed that he wanted to make a huge impact on the defense. He had one sack and two tackles for loss in that opening game.
After his strong work, there was a realization he needed to be in there full time. Drew was able to start in 12 of the 13 games in the 2019 season. He had 80 total tackles, tying the team record that season. I mean the dude was an absolute beast. We knew he might make an impact, but it was an awesome and welcome surprise how much he actually did for the defense. A big shout out and thanks to Drew for being an unsung hero that now people know of and sing his praises.
*As a side note, I’m just waiting for Steve to be inducted into the NDMBB Ring of Honor, because he deserves it. That’s a dream of mine to see that.
Last year in our player profile series, our very own Pat Rick wrote the profile on Drew White. He called him White Drew in reference to White Steve. That would be a monniker given to Steve Vasturia of NDMBB fame from 2014-2018. I called him Baby Steve, but either works. He was and still is a very beloved member of some amazing Irish basketball teams. I know that Pat Rick called Drew White this out of love, and I’m calling Drew’s spirit animal as Steve Vasturia. They both seemed to be unsung, but they are true work horses and help the team in so many ways. Plus, they just get work done without making it a big deal. It’s awesome.
With the rise of Drew White in 2019, I think we are all expecting and hoping he has the same type of production in 2020. He did such an awesome job at plugging the gap, rushing, getting tackles, and overpowering offensive skill players last season. I mean he led the team in total tackles, which was so boss. When leadership and experience are paramount, Drew White delivers on those. Clark Lea, I’m sure, will look to use him as the veteran of sorts in the linebackers and in the defense as a whole. I see big things from Drew White, truly the Steve Vasturia of this era of Notre Dame Football.
