Notre Dame Football Recruiting: California DE Devin Aupiu flips from UCLA to the Irish

Add another one to Elston’s tribe

Notre Dame added another good prospect to its 2021 class when 3-Star defensive end Devin Aupiu flipped his commitment from the UCLA Bruins to the Irish. The Oxnard native is currently ranked as an outside linebacker, but the 6’6” 225 pound athlete’s future is at DE in South Bend.

Aupiu was only just offered by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish back on November 29th, but many analysts felt that once he did get that offer — he was going to flip. Devin also held offers from the Arizona State Sun Devils and California Golden Bears while he was committed to the Bruins.

He will be enrolling early this winter at Notre Dame, which gives Mike Elston a little more time to continue to develop Aupiu and prepare him for a group that Elston has consistently made one of the best on the Irish football team.

This is the 24th commitment for the 2021 recruiting class, and the Irish have been on a tear over the last month — particularly with west coast prospects and flips.

Notre Dame is still heavily pursuing a handful of targets — notably CB Ceyair Wright and RB Donavon Edwards. Just for argument’s sake, if the Irish landed both, that would put this class at 26 commitments in a cycle that we thought would only have around 20 for the take.

The early period for college football signing day begins on Wednesday next week. Currently the Irish have the #8 recruiting class according to the 247 Team Composite rankings.
