Following Thursday night’s loss, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came back to overpower the Arizona State Sun Devils in South Bend 5-4 in the second of the two-game series.

First Period

The Irish wasted no time setting the tone Friday and eventually outshot the Sun Devils 21-15 in the first period of play. Alex Steeves put Notre Dame on the board about five minutes in and Landon Slaggert doubled the team’s score not even 15 seconds later. The Sun Devils closed out the period with a goal of their own from Jordan Sandhu.

Second Period

The Sun Devils tied it up 2-2 with a goal from Matthew Kopperud about halfway into the second. Not even five minutes later, Kopperud snatched another goal on the power play following a penalty on Notre Dame’s Colin Theisen for playing with a broken stick. Ryan O’Reilly later chalked up another Arizona State goal to end the second period 4-2 Sun Devils.

Third Period

The Irish momentum returned about halfway through the third period with a goal from Jake Pivonka. About a minute later, Notre Dame’s Solag Bakich scored to tie it 4-4. However, it was Nick Leivermann who locked it in for the Irish with a fifth goal with five seconds remaining in the third.
