Notre Dame Basketball: Irish lose to Virginia at home, 66-57

Poor guard play sealed their fate

NCAA Basketball: Virginia at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish played a mostly close game against the Virginia Cavaliers in ACC play, but were unable to overtake a 4 point deficit with less than 3 minutes in the game, to finally lose 66-57.

The #23 ranked Cavs got beat up by Gonzaga in the previous game, but in what was their conference opener, they remained a giant thorn in Notre Dame’s side. Nate Laszewki led all scorers with 28 points on the night, and Juwan Durham added 19 of his own — but there was little to no help from the other payers surrounding the big men.

The guard combination of Prentiss Hubb, Cormac Ryan, and Dane Goodwin combined for a measly 9 points and were a combined 3-20 from the field. Trey Wertz scored a single point on the night, and went out of the game with a sprained ankle towards the end of the first half.

For Notre Dame... there is no way in the world they are going to win basketball games with guard play like that.

The Irish are now 3-5 (0-2) for the year and will travel to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday.
