Here we are just a few days away from seeing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl for the College Football Playoff, and it feels like every story written about Notre Dame football over the past two decades is here for us to unwrap.
It’s fine — it’s what we should have probably expected after the loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship game. Except, you know... it still hurts.
The only way to re-write history (or at least change the narrative of history) is to win. For the record, history should be studied and not re-written by the winner — but that’s for a different type of website.
Can Notre Dame do it? I thought it was funny when Liam Eichenberg made mention of Alabama’s blowout loss in the playoff in 2018 — which was the last time either of these schools were in the CFP. Bama was blown out by Clemson by more points than Clemson blew out Notre Dame. And yet... the 2012 game seems more relevant to sports writers around the country.
Hey... we’re here, so we might as well follow the advice from Liam Eichenberg’s favorite Cleveland catcher, Jake Taylor:
