The Notre Dame Fighting Irish took on the Michigan State Spartans Sunday at Compton Family Ice Arena to close out a two-game series. Following Saturday’s tie, but dealing with the same power play struggles as the previous night, the Irish fell to the Spartans 4-3 in overtime.
First Period
The Irish set the tone in a hurry with a goal from Graham Slaggert about a minute into the first period of play. However, the Spartans were quick to react with a tying but initially disputed score from Charlie Combs about two minutes later. Penalty after penalty came in the following minutes of the period, but both squads failed to capitalize on the power play opportunities. At the end of the first, the Irish had outshot the Spartans 15-4.
Perfectly placed.

Second Period
The Irish continued to outshoot the Spartans into the next period of play, but it was Michigan State that snatched the lead early in the second with a goal from Mitch Lewandowski to bring the game to 2-1 Spartans.
Third Period
The Irish headed into the third with some new momentum and a goal from Grant Silianoff to bring the standing to a 2-2 tie. About five minutes later, Notre Dame’s Michael Graham scored his second goal of the season to grab the 3-2 lead for the Irish. It looked like the Irish had locked it in until Michigan State’s Tommy Apap scored to tie the game 3-3 with less than 25 seconds left in regulation.
