People, the last regular season game of 2020 is upon us. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will take on the Syracuse Orange on Saturday afternoon. As you might have heard, the Irish were supposed to play Wake Forest on the 12th. However, the Demon Deacons football team has Covid issues. So, with trading Covid problems this season, the Irish will not play Wake Forest - we must not have been destined to play them this season.

But, that does leave us with the game against Syracuse coming up this weekend. And, for yet another time this season, the Irish are extremely heavy favorites. The Irish are on a tear this season. They are 9-0, they just beat UNC and stifled their great offense, and they have clinched a spot in the ACC Championship game. Oh yeah, and they are number 2 in the nation via the College Football Playoff rankings. Syracuse is, well, not really on a tear. The struggling Orange are 1-9 this season with a 1-8 conference record. They sit last in the ACC standings with their only win against Georgia Tech this season. The betting lines I am about to provide you will reflect the opposite trajectories of the two teams.

The Irish are an insanely heavy favorite for this game. It is Senior Day, and the Irish go into the final home game of the year as a whopping 33.5-point favorite. Before this game, the biggest spread we saw was in the 20s. When you get a spread into the 30s, then you know there is a clear favorite. There isn’t even a moneyline on this game.

As you can see, the O/U is 51.5. Other places might have it at 52 points. If you take a look at Oddsshark, they are predicting the Orange not to score many points. They average only around 17 points per game while giving up around 31 points per game. There is a clear mismatch here.

Matty G’s Prediction

I am always super wary of really big point spreads like this one. It is just a crazy number of points to cover. I’m not saying that the game will be close, but I have a tough time a lot of times to have the heavy favorite cover in a circumstance like this. I have strong confidence that the Irish can run away with this one. However, it is a home game, in South Bend, in December. The weather looks decent for an early December afternoon, but it will still be chilly. I could honestly see the Irish winning like 42-10, so just barely missing the cover. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Irish could cover, but I’m not going to call for that right now. Maybe it gets into the third quarter with this score or similar, and the team calls off the dogs to get everyone rested. This is the conservative pick for me. However, maybe this will be like the USF game and the Irish not only cover, but hit the over themselves. With my prediction, I see the over hitting just barely.
