The Notre Dame Fighting Irish returned to Compton Family Ice Arena Sunday to finish a two-game series against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Following Saturday night’s 3-0 showing against the Buckeyes, the Irish fell to the Buckeyes 3-2.
It was the guys in gold and blue who set the tone from the puck drop and went after it on offense. The Irish eventually more than quadrupled the Buckeyes’ two shots on goal in the first period with 9 of their own. About 7 minutes into play, Notre Dame’s Jake Pivonka put his team on the board and the standing remained 1-0 Irish as the two teams headed into the second.
After each team tried and failed to capitalize on power play opportunities early in the second, Nate Clurman chalked up another Irish point about 14 minutes into the period. Later on, Notre Dame’s Max Ellis headed to the penalty box for hooking and the Buckeyes responded with a power play goal from Mark Cheremeta to end the period 2-1 Irish. The Buckeyes upped the offensive aggression in the second period of play, more than doubling Notre Dame’s 6 shots on goal with 13.
Charlie Raith snatched a third goal for the Irish four minutes into the third, but officials negated the point following a 10-minute major to Ryder Rolston for hitting from behind. Just after the call, Ohio State’s Quinn Preston scored on the power play to bring the game to a 2-2 tie. Just 45 seconds later, Preston netted another point to bring Ohio State the 3-2 lead and lock in the game for an Ohio State victory.
